Dec. 28th, 2018 04:29 pmWell, Christmas is done.
I spent Christmas Eve cooking and prepping (orange and lemon cheesecake, two kinds of stuffing) and made a list for The Day Itself, and, to my astonishment—this never happens—I kept to it perfectly. We'd acquired 4kg of rolled pork shoulder, but I put some of it in the freezer and cooked 6lb. Mixed measurements, but I cook meat in pounds as I'm working from my grandma's ancient Stork cookbook. Also, when I put my reduced piece onto the scale, it hit 6lb almost perfectly. FIL peeled potatoes and parsnips, and everything was on schedule by the time the offspring arrived at ten, and stayed on schedule despite the long period of gift opening.
Beast and I appear to have made Real Grownups, for the children* gave us a Blu-Ray player for Christmas and a remote control to replace the broken one for our amplifier (and Bun made a cake). My bro-in-law gave me several m/m romance novels (slightly to my surprise, but they were on my wishlist), and my sister gave me Michelle Obama's book. And truffles! All in all, I did Very Well out of it!
* I suspect that Bun was the instigator of all this, but hey.

Boxing Day was spent getting FIL to his plane. In the morning, I checked and repacked his suitcase and provided him with a list of its contents, including what to wear with what and when, while he is on the cruise ship. After lunch we loaded into the car and set off for Heathrow—and despite some gloomy traffic predictions had a very good run thither. Arrived about an hour earlier than we thought was a good idea, but his check-in desk was open anyway. They were happy to get someone to load him into a wheelchair and ferry him through security and off to the Business Class lounge, so we are assuming he got to Australia without problems.
I do hope he will enjoy the cruise. Back in March it seemed like a very good idea to send him on a holiday during the chilly months that would give him plenty of entertainment and lots of middle-class people to talk to, but he has deteriorated mentally quite a bit since then, and has been fretting about how he is going to manage. I think he'll be perfectly fine once he's been on the boat for a week, but those first few days are obviously a bit intimidating...

Those of you who Ravel can inspect my most recent projects, which I've now gotten round to putting up: an autumnal coloured leaf-lace scarf, the peacock shawl, the Sagitta asymmetric shawl made from leftover peacock yarn, and the slightly overdue Christmas sweater for my nephew. I'm Nestholder on Ravelry.
I'm contemplating another bit of selfish knitting next, and trying to decide between two patterns: the Madrona Lace Scarf and the Cashsilk Fern Scarf. Inclining somewhat towards the former, I think. I have an autumnal BFL/nylon skein of red-browns, soft greens and pale beiges which I think deserves to become something I can put round my neck. Opinions?

I love the fierceness of this Medusa statue!
And this Nativity Set is, well, um. Yes.
I spotted a Llance Bass Christmas Sweater in Marks & Spencer!

And a very interesting article entitled What kind of person makes false rape accusations? which may be useful to you if you need to demolish some stupid arguments about women who regret it the morning after, and suchlike crap. Happy Christmas.

There is a mouse in the kitchen! We saw it scuttle under the fridge as we were having dinner. Cannot tell whether Princess Fluffykins brought it in, or it found its own way, but still. A house with two cats should not contain any mice!

And, finally, I think it is time for some discussion of MTYGs past. But they'll have to wait until tomorrow, as I haven't figured out quite what to do.
