Am astonished to learn (via browsing at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books) that authors in the USA whose books are lent from public libraries receive *no* compensation.

Weird.

Well, considering the only money libraries earn is from late fees, I don't know where libraries would even get the money. No way the government would agree to it.
They compensate in the UK? How does that work?

Government agrees to it... I believe there's a system that keeps track of what is lent out, and there's a central fund that pays the authors. It's a few pence per book, with a cap of £6,600 - so *huge* authors like Catherine Cookson don't get vast amounts, which is okay because their books sell anyway, and minor authors probably don't starve.
