No ST:TNG exchanges, in my experience. The thing is, the interaction back then was either in newsgroups or email groups, and although the alt.startrek.creative newsgroup was where the fic writers and readers congregated, it wasn't anywhere near as good a means of getting to know each other as LiveJournal. Did DWNOGA start before the fandom got onto LJ? If it did, there must (surely) have been some forum or other for popslashers...
What I did mean to mention was Remix, which I've participated in many times, and rather miss now that it is so fandom-inclusive that I can't easily participate any more. It's a writerly challenge, it became increasingly sophisticated in terms of the styles of story that were produced, and it somehow also felt like a gift exchange, in that I always wanted the remixee to feel happy with what I had done. I'm very pleased with most of my Remix stories, but I think that like a Christmas exchange, it's the kind of challenge that really belongs within one fandom, for best effect.
