Further to the My Sondheim Christmas Presents post yesterday, for anyone who is interested in Sondheim and/or lyric writing and/or musical theatre, I would recommend 'Finishing A Hat' but not so much "Look, I made a Hat". The first book covers most of the musicals, at least, most of the ones I care about (at all). In the second, Sondheim does not include segments about the flaws of other lyricists (which are interesting, whether or not I agree with them); he does comment at length about revivals of theatre productions, but there is only so much to say on that, uh, score. And he spends an *incredible* length of book on Wise Guys/Bounce/Whatever Else It Is Called, which seems to have been in the workshopping stage pretty much for ever. Note to Mr Sondheim: not every lyric you ever wrote is a precious thing that needs to be preserved for ever. Perhaps you could make a book about trying to create a failed musical?

I'm being a bit extra-cynical, but really, there isn't much in book 2 that interests me, and what there is is often rather sparse. 'Evening Primrose', which I have never seen but only heard the songs for, does interest me, and gets short shrift.

So if you are yearning for these books, buy the first one, which is well worth your time.

Grumph. I spent much of yesterday afternoon at the beginning of the card-making process, but made the mistake of using some flimsy bits of see-through stuff and found this morning that they had all curled up into unusability, and the ones which hadn't curled were nonetheless unusable. Shocking waste of paint. I won't say, waste of time, as what else do I have to do with it?

I do like Snowflake Challenge time, as it means my Reading list is far fuller than usual. But I don't know that I'll answer today's challenge. For the RL people of whom I am a fan, I'd like to keep them at their proper distance, which is Over There, Being Fabulous; as for the fictional ones, I can decide for myself who they are without having to ask them!

Yep! It must be very difficult to run the Snowflake Challenge without feeling that you're asking the same things again and again, but of necessity some of the challenges aren't going to work for us all.

Quite! I may be able to salvage some bits. But I seem to have rather less tough packaging material than I expected. And my card stocks are somewhat depleted!

I felt similarly to you re: the challenge today, it was tough.

I've come to the hard won conclusion that a big part of being a Sondheim superfan is pretending you care about Wise Guys. (I mean, the premise sounds...fine? And if it ever actually made it to B'way, of course I'd go and see it. But in the meantime, like. Can we talk about something else for a little while? Please?)

Yeah. Although I am quite interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff, how did you shoot this bit, what inspired you to write that story, etc. Perhaps, interested enough to read about it, but a dinner party at which I interrogated my guests about technicalities would be a bad idea!

The second book has Sunday(etc) and Into the Woods, which I care about, and not much else. But save your cents for the first one!

It is annoying! I thought I had *loads* of reusable plastic, and it turns out that a lot of it was not quite what I need. :-( Oh well.
