To my complete astonishment, my Adorable Niece asked for a biography of Margaret Thatcher for Christmas.

*boggles*

So, what can I give her as a companion book? I already intend to give her The Princess Bride, for it is a delight, but a biography of another high achieving woman who, well, isn't Margaret Thatcher?

are you including historical women in that? because there are probably a bunch, especially from other regions, that might be very interesting. I'm thinking of people like the famous Chinese pirate Ching Shih, or some of the Victorian women who went off to explore the Sahara or whatever.

if you're looking at modern political figures, you might see if there's one for Angela Merkel or even Hilary Clinton. and while she might not strictly meet the descriptor 'high achieving woman' because so much of her identity has been tied up with her husband's career, Michelle Obama is a fascinating person who has done a lot to focus attention on bringing educational opportunities to girls around the world. I just bought her bio for my mom for Xmas.

I've been pondering the Michelle Obama book, but I'll probably just get it for me! Maybe I should buy the Thatcher autobiography and a hostile biography as well... Difficult.

The "Forgotten Women" series? Though Emma Goldman or Rosa Luxemburg would balance things out.

Dorothy Hodgkin. Famous chemist, tutor to Margaret Thatcher. Left wing peace campaigner, but she and Thatcher remained good friends.

Michelle Obama's book is just out - I haven't read it (yet, tbr pile was much embiggened by a recent birthday), but the reviews from people I generally trust have been excellent

I'm thinking of getting it for *me*... but it may be a future paperback for my niece. Really, I'm going to have to find out why she wants a biog of Thatcher.
