Jun. 10th, 2009 10:29 amIt's been... busy. And... weird.
But intervals of fun! Bun and I went to see Mika at Sadlers Wells on Monday evening. I do retain a vague impression of crossness at all the waiting - tickets said 7.30pm but they didn't even open the doors to the auditorium until about ten to eight! Grrrr.
It was kinda... Mika being 'fanfic!JC', the JC we think JC ought to be these days, but he really isn't.
I covet, oh, I covet the set they had. It was like something out of Star Trek (TOS), a rocky moonscape, but covered, and seriously, *covered*, with glitter. A landscape from Planet Glitter. With grand piano in the centre, a couple of singers parked behind it, drummer and guitarists over to the left, and twelve strings players (3 cellos, the rest presumably violins and violas) on the right. Mika in pink jacket and ludicrously tight black trousers—possibly helpful with the high notes. Once he came on the place erupted with energy, and it was fascinating. A very enjoyable show, despite the two or three kids behind us who shrieked as only prepubescent girls can shriek. I was a lot more tolerant of this than Bun, who has plainly allowed her inner thirteenie to die a natural death. Most of the audience were twentysomethings, or older.
The show included all my favourites from the CD I have, and some very promising songs which are I think just available. There was a terrific 'thunderstorm' effect with glitter falling like rain to introduce "Big Girl, You Are Beautiful" mid-way through the set, and at the end "Lollipop" was accompanied by giant balloons 2' - 3' in diameter, and one humungous balloon about person-height in diameter, bobbing around stage and audience. Final encore saw most of the eager ladies in the front row dancing on the stage along with the boy himself. Also, mercifully, it was *not too loud*, ie a nice sane volume, loud enough to be great fun, not so loud as to be painful. Makes a change, these days—Adorable Niece complained that the music in "Mama Mia" hurt her ears, why do theatres put so much emphasis on volume and not enough on clarity?
And now, I am busy with follow-through on our decision to cancel the summer show. May be a bit grumpy and put-upon for a while...
