pensnest: Baby Lance and Chris, caption Up to no good (Trickyfish up to no good)
By great good fortune, we managed to be on a tour of Sydney Opera House this morning just at the perfect moment to witness a mass of people in vivid and sparkly garments performing a joyful samba to 'Love is in the Air' on the terrace by the water. They were filming a promo for the stage musical of "Strictly Ballroom", coming soon to a theatre unfortunately on the wrong side of the world from me by the time it opens. Baz Luhrman and all. It put the biggest smile on my face, and Bun and I were very sad that we won't be in town to see the show.

Oh, yes. We're in Sydney. Right now, reclining on the bed to rest my red-hot feet, after the opera house, lunch on Circular Quay, and a long meandering walk through the Botanical Gardens and then all the way back along George Street. The weather is delightful—sunny but not oppressive—and I am most happy to be far from the UK.

Day 22: Fic written specially for you!
The Kirkpatrick Guide to Ageing Gracefully by ocelot summer, for MTYG 2011. Chris is turning forty, and he *still* has a crush on Lance.

Obviously I don't have a story of my own for this category, so instead I will give you yet more proof that I have been really lucky with MTYG stories, there is also Prove Them Wrong by Chalcopyrite, probably the only SeSa story I have ever received that wasn't Trickyfish—it might have been, but it seems Chris just wasn't co-operating and Nick was. An Nsync reunion is in progress but it has its attendant problems, of course.

23rd Pairing you never expected to enjoy, but this story makes it work

Sticking with Chalcopyrite for a while longer, Off-Piste features Kevin/Brian. Now, I don't have any American-style worries about cousin incest, 'cause I don't care, but it's not a pairing that would ever have occurred to me. However, the scene in which Kevin massages Brian's foot is unexpectedly filled with interesting sexual tension, and thereafter, I'm quite prepared to buy into it.

As I included my Brian/Justin story last time round, I don't think I have anything in this category either.
pensnest: very young Lance in b/w (Lance Picture Perfect)
20th Crack, and not ashamed of it!
Barking Mad, by hurricanemegan. Written for Me for MTYG 2010! Chris has been turned into a chihuaua, which leads to Taco Bell jokes, drunkenness and resentment. Awesome.

Mine: Who's Your Daddy? in which JC is with child. (There seems to be quite a bit of this genre in my oeuvre. I have normalised it to the extent that I actually found myself looking at an adjacent story and thinking, but no, that one could have been canon... except for the part where Lance turns into a teddybear. Hmm.)

Day 21 (because I won't be in a position to post tomorrow): AU, Alternate Timeline (or Trousers of Time).

Of course, I recced Withdiamonds' Green Scales Fell Like Rain last time, but happily a recent MTYG challenge brought us With a Sprinkle of Fairy Dust and a Slap on the Butt by SnarkyLlama - in which JC becomes a dancer instead of joining Nsync, and is a judge on Dancing with the Stars when Lance is on the show. Charming story, and very happy-making.

I haven't written my 'Trousers of Time' story yet. Perhaps I never will.
pensnest: Howie from Sphynkter (Howie hot)
18th Great dialogue
Two Straight Guys in Wisconsin: The Amazing Adventures of Chris and His Cock If you've been a popslasher, you've read this. If you haven't, you should read it anyway.

Mine: I have no idea.

19th: Real World with Added Weirdness - canon-based, but with an inexplicable element, eg mpreg, superpowers, wings, magic is real etc Cigarettes and Sunrise by ocelot summer, with two worlds, not quite colliding, wonderfully atmospheric and strange.

Mine: La Leyenda, in which Howie runs a nightclub and has a tall, dark and handsome visitor.
pensnest: bright-eyed baby me (Brian/AJ love)
ie a story based on some other story.

I'm actually going to rec my fandom's version of Pretty Woman, You with the sad eyes by bubbleforest, because it is heartfelt and funny and sad and it makes sense. Note: I have never actually seen Pretty Woman.

I used Show you the Shape of my What? last time, so here is my Cinderella story: A Night at the Palace

And now, I have a pile of ironing to attend to. :-(
pensnest: Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick, caption Perfect Opposites (Trickyfish perfect opposites)
I spent quite a lot of the night unable to sleep, in part because I was fretting about Bun, who was en route to Australia, with a worryingly short time scheduled between getting off the plane in Melbourne and getting onto a plane for Launceston. Particularly since the flight leaving London was delayed by the best part of an hour. Happily, she made it and is at Grandpa's house.

Feb Fic Day 15: Threesome I nominate Naked Christmas, by Ephemera and Nopseud, but at the moment MTYG seems to be undergoing some kind of crisis and won't load properly, so I shall have to come back and edit the link. Anyway. Lance is miserable, Chris is worried about him, and AJ is fabulous. I liked it enough to podfic the story a while ago.

Mine: as I've already counted the two most explicit threesomes against other prompts, how about Toga Party which is Justin/Lance/Kevin.

Feb Fic Day 16: Friendship Same Song, Next Verse by Chacopyrite, in which Joey is a very good friend to Lance. I mean, the story's not exactly about that, but it's true. I love Joey and Lance as friends.

Mine: Chris finally asked me last summer.
pensnest: close up of Adam Lambert without makeup (Adam beautiful)
Eldorado by Chalcopyrite Vegas in its early years, just after the end of Prohibition. Fascinating look into a place and time to which I'd never before given a moment's thought.

Mine: Sparrowhawk and Beeswax is an Adam Lambert/omc story; for popslash it would have to be Moonlight Robbery.
pensnest: Lance eyes the camera: And where would you like me to put it? (Lava Lamps Rule)
Day 12, yesterday, was for a fic that 'Breaks your heart', and to be honest, I couldn't think of one - most likely because stories that make me sad are not in general my favourite kind. I think the ones I recced last time for this category - Green Scales Fell Like Rain and Calling All Angels, and my own Broken, will have to do.

Does anyone have any recs for this category?

Day 13: Rare Pairing

I win the bonus points for a pairing that's only been done once, at least, I'm pretty sure I do: Justify What I've Become by Ephemera, which is Chris Kirkpatrick/Randy Blyth, and I'm pretty sure unique in that respect! Intensely atmospheric, vivid, rather sordid, beautifully written.

I've done quite a few unusual pairings, but recced several of them last time round. Hmm. Aha! Lala.
pensnest: Photo of me with face painted squirls (My squirly face)
I was charmed, in the search for something to fill this prompt, to discover a ficlet I did not remember reading before. It's by [livejournal.com profile] stellamira and it is here. Not sure if it has a title. Heh!
ETA: It is called Lantz.

I didn't think I'd done anything with tentacles, but then I remembered Justin Junior
pensnest: JC and AJ together (Letterboys)
For today's rec it's back to [personal profile] nopseud and this year's MTYG challenge: Frozen Dreams in which JC and AJ run an ice cream parlour. JC (naturally) concocts a dazzling variety of flavours, some of them rather strange, AJ is secretly pining for his ex, Kevin comes along to tape a reality TV show about them and incidentally do some very interesting things with JC, and... so on.

Mine for this prompt: Feast
pensnest: Lance and JC all fluffy and pretty, caption 'beaux' (C-Bass)
Ch-Ch-Changes by KC, in which Lance and Joey run a bar, Chris and Justin a fooderie, and JC turns up to do karaoke. Basically, I'd like to be able to go to this bar (although I'm a bit too old to fit in).

Mine: It Pays To Advertise

Did Pump and Balance today (but not the new Zumba Step class, for it is on at nine am on Sunday, so no) consequently knackered. Dozed on sofa for a couple of hours. Cannot find strength to knit, so peacock shawl on hiatus.
pensnest: Chris in silly hat, caption A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything (Chris in That Hat)
A story that is presented in an unusual way.

There is a shocking dearth of people in popslash who choose to present their stories in (say) blank verse, so here is one which is part diary. Awake My Soul by glitterdragon, written for last year's MTYG. Loving and very sweet.

And, because it is brilliant, Gamol-léac by Castiron must be mentioned. It is not popslash. It is Old Spice Guy.

Mine: The Song of Chris Kirkpatrick

And, in another gustatory first, I have this day cooked and eaten celeriac, and rather to my surprise found it good.
pensnest: Lance Bass grinning with silver-haired Adam Lambert (Lance and Adam)
This one's a little awkward, not because there aren't popslash crossovers, one way or another, but more because I haven't kept track. And quite a lot of popslash with a 'crossover' label means Nsync/Backstreet, and I'm not counting that, not since my last six years of MTYG have involved Backstreet.

Crossover with another RPF fandom seems reasonable, though, so that's what I'm going for today. Annoyingly, I recced both Moments When You Can't Deny What's True (Nick Carter/Patrick Stump) and Eight Times (JC Chasez/Gerard Way) last February, and my love for both stories is still true. So today's rec is for 42 by Arsenic. It's arguably the sequel to Eight Times, and certainly mostly bandslash (Bob Bryar/Spencer Smith) but with a sparkly injection of JC Chasez, still snuggling Gerard Way. The JC/Gerard secondary pairing isn't a huge deal for the story, but the rest of the story still makes me happy.

There really ought to be a popslash crossover with His Dark Materials. Daemons would be so much fun! Anyone?

I'm going with The Adam Lambert Experience for my own RPF crossover story—part of my Bouquet series. I think there are a couple of Adam Lambert/Lance Bass stories on Nifty (I have not investigated with any determination) but as far as my fandom is concerned, I do believe I invented this pairing. And an awesome pairing it is, too.
pensnest: exceptionally cool dog, caption 'dude, please' (Dude dog)
The Lance Is A Llama story, and its awesome Remix, are obvious candidates for this one, but I recced the remix last year, and there are plenty of other stories that feature someone's pets, or animals in a more general way. So here is Park Guy by [livejournal.com profile] wanderingwombat This was written for the popslash Bittybang challenge, it's an AU and features a Justin and Lance who encounter one another in the park, running/walking the dogs. A slow-building romance, and rather lovely. Disclaimer: I did the artwork for this one, which is probably why I remember it features the dogs.

My own candidate (as I used The First Step last year) is Cat, in which an invader intimidates Buster and brings Chris and AJ together.
pensnest: Silhouette of witch dancing in a green texture (Witch dancer)
The definition of 'fantasy' being not necessarily 'it has elves and/or mages', but rather broader.

Oddly, although I've enjoyed fantasy novels for many years, I don't read and love a vast amount of Fantasy within popslash—and I've written at least two that would qualify as such. However, I think my choice for today's category fits the label, in that it is a world which doesn't now and never did exist.

Temperance by [personal profile] nopseud. I was present as this story was conceived—indeed, I provided the, er, spark, although only by proxy, as I was bewailing the prompt I'd received for that year's MTYG (2009), which was 'post-apocalypse with vampires and romance'. I have to admit, the concept of vampires running a tea shop would not have occurred to me, but Nopseud was very excited about it, and the resultant story is atmospheric, convincing and highly readable.

There are a couple of follow-up stories, too: Providence and honesty.

Sadly, I put my response to this MTYG prompt (for this world to be unbroken) onto my list last year, so I won't use it here. Instead, have a more conventionally 'fantasy' world in Tribute, written for my own Dragon Challenge in 2008. In which there is a dragon in the sky, and someone has to be sacrificed.
pensnest: Nick Carter looking gorgeous, caption guh! (Nick guh)
A little GSF, plus quite a few encounters for Nick, here, which is Zoicite's "Want". In which Nick realises, rather belatedly, that he wants someone who's now unavailable. I like the scene where Nick masturbates in the shower best, I think!

I'll go for a very recent story for my own under this heading: take a second just to breathe, the follow-up to my MTYG 2013 story. Threesome, yay!
pensnest: Chris in silly hat, caption A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything (Chris in That Hat)
Another recent story, from 2013's MTYG challenge: Nothing Risque, Nothing Gained by brandywine. Lovely snarky style, and so many phrases that made me giggle. Like: It wasn’t fair. Before he’d met Chris, Lance had always been the guy with the most expressive eyebrows in the room.

Of mine, I think Bargain makes me smirk rather than LOL, but the idea of selling Lou Pearlman's soul (with paperwork) does have a certain appeal.

Am making stout progress on my peacock shawl, so back to my knittings I go.
pensnest: Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick, caption Perfect Opposites (Trickyfish perfect opposites)
Today's type is Songfic, whether it's a story that uses a song as a title, a starting point, inspiration, whatever.

I really like My Boyfriend's Back by withdiamonds, in which Chris and Lance are on again, and everybody else is hoping that this time, they'll get it right. The guys are recording, rather sporadically, and neither Chris nor Lance is quite brave enough to tell the other how they're feeling. Until they are.

My own is Collaboration, written for JM, Queen of Letterboys, for MTYG 2008. Which was awkward, in that I could not ask JM about the lyrics for the song JC and AJ wrote together, and so had to deduce what I could from some rather iffy YouTube recordings, but which was also great, because I knew she would notice the song lurking in the story.
pensnest: Lance all fierce and stuff, caption grar! (Lance GRAR!)
I have a [personal profile] chalcopyrite today and we are off to Cromer for a Thing, which at least one of us will probably explain later. So, I am posting early to get my February Fic Recs started in a timely fashion.

So, the first category of February Fic Recs is

A fic with a great opening )

The master list for this year is here. Do join in!
pensnest: Two Kit Kat girls about to kiss, caption Wilkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome (Cabaret)
Last year, I indulged in a rec a day during February, and I'm happy to say that a few other people recced along. I don't remember where this originated, but it was fun. So I'm planning to have a go at the same thing this year. With, of course, a bit of variation in the content of the daily list, or I'd be nominating the same stories all over again.

Do feel free to share the list, and rec every day or on the ones that appeal to you. It's kinda fun to spend a bit of time thinking, well, what *is* the best story of this kind?

I think you might want a bit of time to prepare, so here's the list:

You're reccing a story with: )

And if you want to substitute one of the categories with something else, why not?
