pensnest: the NSYNC boys in red and white (NSYNC group)
I have—inevitably—spent far more of today than I would have liked working on the programme for our imminent show. There are *always* last-minute issues, always. And I have to go out in a little while and go over the proof with someone, because for reasons passing understanding she wasn't able to download it from my Sendspace link.

Oh well.

Last day of the February Festival thing, and it is of course a story with a great ending.

I found it hard to figure out what to pick—because really, so many great endings in popslash, and I dunno, I couldn't think of one that was spectacularly better than anything else.

But I was reminded of how much I enjoy Summer on the Half Shell: Love Tastes Like Lemon Ice Cream When You're Not Paying Attention, a crossovery tale in which Lance and Nick have a relationship and Justin and AJ develop one, and along the way Backstreet re-learn the art of physical contact.

Of my own, I think I have to nominate for this world to be unbroken, with thanks again to [personal profile] nopseud for poking at the plot holes until they went away.

And that's my lot, for now! I hope those of you who've been playing along will catch up, because it's been such fun revisiting familiar stories and occasionally being pointed at something I don't remember reading before. Rec on!
pensnest: Chris and Lance in close up, caption Mine! (Trickyfish mine)
A story that just makes you happy.

MPREG, by Rhys, may actually be my favourite story of all. I don't look for mpreg, but it's an essential part of this story—the story couldn't happen without the pregnancy, and yet in a lot of ways the story isn't about the pregnancy. And I love it.

Of my own, The First Step. It came to me out of nowhere when I put a prompt together with a news item, and I have inexplicable and immense love for it.
pensnest: Justin and Lance close up (Lambs love)
A Remix story.

Walk like a camelidae: the Doctor Doolittle talk talk mix by Terri. I mean, I love the original story, and this is *even better*, by which it is possible that I mean even more absurd and adorable.

I'm very pleased with most of my own Remixes, from the Very Secret Diary of JC Chasez to the iambic pentameter rendition of zvi's 'That Thing We Do', but I think, by a whisker, my favourite has to be So tell me about your mother, the remix of Phaballa's 'Now That's what I call a motherfucking Oedipus complex'. Hmm.
pensnest: Bassez/Timbertone/Cramp (Love comes in many guises)
A story that spawned an inside joke.

Where did you put the lava lamp?

Do you want me to explain?

For my own contribution, I nominate Home Cooking.

See, several years ago there was a popslash Christmas card exchange in which we sent cards 'from' our recipient's nominated favourite boy(s). My recipient (Ephemera—who seems to have inspired an incredible number of my fics) wanted Chris, Lance and Nick. Well, I decided that Chris and Lance (and Joey - probably because that seemed reasonable at the time) would send recipies. They roped Justin and JC into including their own. Lance's recipe was Mississippi Cornbread; Joey's was Fatone Chicken. Justin sent a fruit cobbler recipe and JC sent vegetarian pot stickers. Chris sent Better Than Sex Cake, annotated with horrified comments from Lance and Joey.(1)

Some time afterwards I noticed Ephemera had a request up at [livejournal.com profile] fic_requests for a threesome featuring Chris, Lance and Joey. Aha, I thought, and wrote Home Cooking, which involved each of them making their Christmas recipes for a celebration meal. The dessert was characterised as a lethal weapon, not unreasonably—it's basically chocolate cake supersaturated with condensed milk, plus added topping and crushed chocolate bars.

And somehow, when we had the first Camp Sparkle, it seemed reasonable to make one of these deadly cakes. We adapted it somewhat (none of us was prepared to eat Cool Whip even if we could find it, so we used whipped cream, and British sweets) and re-christened it Death Cake, and it's been on the menu ever since.

*pride*

(1) If anyone would like them, I probably still have the file somewhere and can send .pdfs
pensnest: Joey Fatone in blue (Joey simply gorgeous)
A 'guilty pleasure'.

See, this is awkward. I don't really have any guilty pleasure... at least, I can't think of any. So I have no idea what to pick for this one. I don't have any particular guilt about my constant desire for Moar Trickyfish, and, um. Well.

And yet, I can sorta pick one of my own stories, which is Joey masturbating for Kelly's pleasure. I do feel vaguely guilty about this one, being as how it involves an *actual* partnership and who knows, they could conceivably do this. Though Joey probably doesn't! Fantasies.
pensnest: JC in the sky with a hand held control (JC floating over galaxies)
This time, you're looking for a crossover with an unfamiliar fandom—one you didn't know when you read the story.

I read Poptarts In Atlantis by Torch because it was a DWNOGA story in 2005. I'd seen a few Stargate Atlantis icons dotted around LiveJournal, but hadn't read any fic or seen any of the episodes, so for me, the Atlantis environment basically functioned like a really well-realised AU with excellent characters (I very much liked McKay). The link above is chaptered and there are several subsequent stories using the same 'verse. A few other people have done popslash/SGA crossovers too, and all that I've read have been fun.

It's difficult to write a crossover with a fandom you don't know; I did it with Bouquet, but I've already used that one, so how about The Joy and the Colour which introduced me to Mika. Thank you, Ephemera!

In other news, I think it's Spring! It was positively *warm* out when I went for my singing lesson. Didn't actually get a singing lesson, as my teacher didn't so much cancel at the last minute (like last time) as just didn't show up. Oh well.
pensnest: Chris with caption You know you want to (Chris delectable)
A new story. Defined as something posted within the last twelve months.

The obvious source to take a look at is MTYG, although the pop newsletter should have picked up anything else posted during 2011.

I'm going with MTYG, but instead of reccing one of the very worthy stories posted for the challenge itself, I'm going to direct your attention to Curb Appeal, which was written for me by [personal profile] llamabitchyo as a reward for being an MTYG hero. Just-post-space training Lance and Chris comparing asses. And stuff.

For something recent of my own, I have a great fondness for Cake.
pensnest: Chris in silly hat, caption A man walks down the street in that hat, people know he's not afraid of anything (Chris in That Hat)
Real world with added weirdness... you know, based in canon (they're popstars!) but with supernatural or otherwise inexplicable extras, like, magic is real, there are vampires in the audience, they have superpowers, they swapped bodies, etc.

Oh boy. It feels as though fully half of all the popslash stories ever written would qualify for this one. There's the one where Chris shrinks, and the sudden telepathy between Lance and Chris after a lightning strike, and the Lance/Justin bodyswap *fans self* and the JC/Britney bodyswap, and any number of 'wakes up as a girl' stories, and, and...

I'm going to go with something that won't immediately spring to mind, namely A Sheepish Kind of Love by Natalie. In which the people who fall in love with Chris... turn into sheep.

I also seem to have written a few of these... okay, Round Dance is my body-swap story, only I didn't want to write one in which two people swap with one another and exchanged information at once. I decided to write something in which four people swapped, but in a sort of pass-it-on exchange, and didn't realise they hadn't done a straightforward swap... There's not a lot of precedent for multiple body-hop-swap stories, and as I've written one, I know why. Inevitably, it turned into Trickyfish. Oh, what the heck—also Horny, which features a unicorn.
pensnest: JC looking cheeky and surrounded by shinies (JC sparkles happily)
A pairing you never expected to enjoy!

Eight Times by Arsenic, is JC Chasez/Gerard Way. It's really intriguing and also, as it turns out, adorable.

One I didn't expect to enjoy writing was a Brian Littrell/Justin Timberlake ficlet I wrote for MTYG testing. We were all heavily under the influence of [personal profile] nopseud at the time, obviously! Very silly story, but fun.
pensnest: bright-eyed baby me (dragon)
My weary body has completed an hour of Body Pump today and then an hour of Body Balance, so it wants me to sit down. Don't blame it.

Day 19: a series or collection.

The Epic of the Lambs by Donna, a wonderful intertwined then-and-now Lambs story based on a set of (I think) 25 prompts. Super, super story.

Noche and Cetacean Blues by [personal profile] chalcopyrite, two stories set in the same supernatural-added universe. I hope there'll be more of these!

My own: er. I've already mentioned Prone and the Chronicles, so I think it'll be my Twice around the prompts set of stories written for the final Dragon Challenge—ten short fics, unrelated by subject but passing one character of the pairing on to the next story, and using all five of the prompts: dragons, dwarves, dolphins, diamonds and demons.
pensnest: Lance Bass with some weird textures (Lance in shades of strange)
Today's rec is for a story that breaks your heart. While popslash is (thank goodness) full of happy, funny, cheerful stories, sometimes someone goes for a quite different effect.

I have two nominations today. First, Green scales fell like rain by Donna, which gives an alternate timeline for Nsync, in which Lance came out during the heyday of the group and the consequences were quite different and distressing. Beautifully done, and scarily plausible.

The other is the Calling All Angels series by [livejournal.com profile] sirkate. It's a very believable look inside the head of someone who decides to kill himself. Here's part one, the subsequent stories are linked from each page. And you'll need to read Iris by Mercutio afterwards, and you may well want to at least start reading Pulled from the wreckage too, as that shows the long road to recovery with, again, a really clear look inside the head of someone who tried to commit suicide and failed. With this latter series, I usually don't read all the way to the end as it loses the fascination of bringing Lance back and becomes a relationship story instead—a complicated poly relationship, sure, but it's the in-a-mindspace-I-don't-know part that I want to read.

Of my own, I guess Broken.
pensnest: Justin gurning in close up (Justin Timberlake god of sex)
A story that makes you laugh.

Aaaaaand.... so many, many choices. Under(his)pants by Sola Fiamma. Actually, this one usually makes me *cry*.

Of my own, Merchandising.
pensnest: the NSYNC boys in red and white (NSYNC group)
Today, it's a story someone wrote specifically for you.

I love this aspect of fandom! The way we inspire one another, the way we offer stories as gifts. What with DWNOGA and MTYG and [livejournal.com profile] fic_requests, and a bunch of other challenges, and sometimes just-because, so many stories are written specifically for other people.

All that lies before you by [livejournal.com profile] ephemera_pop is about Nsync meeting the gods of the Greek pantheon, and it's rich and gorgeous.

Obviously I have to adjust this category a bit to include one of my own stories today. The vast majority of my own stories were inspired in some way by other fans—whether it was a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] fic_requests, a SeSa exchange, or something else. However, I'm going to put down A Hogwarts Christmas, which I wrote for [personal profile] turlough because she was such an awesome fan, but as she didn't write stories herself, she'd never get a DWNOGA story.
pensnest: Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick, caption Perfect Opposites (Trickyfish perfect opposites)
Songfic - a story which uses a song somehow.

and you'll notice my smile (is like kool aid) by Nopseud. I love this story. Lance has this smile, see, and it's really, really effective, it works on all kinds of unexpected people. Chris is pointedly disapproving. Great stuff.

Thirteen Years and Counting uses "Love for Sale" as part of the story. It was apparently the seventh popslash story I wrote, which amazes me quite a bit, for any number of reasons.
pensnest: B/w Lance in sunglasses and smirk (Lance exceptionally cool)
A fic with a wonderful kiss.

I've raved about Prelude to a Kiss before, but it's just right for this category. Lance Bass/John Rzeznik (uh, I hope), so it could have gone in the Rare Pairings category, too. John isn't gay, but he's not so stupid he won't take a blowjob when he's offered one, and Lance is very good at those. And then John likes giving blowjobs, too, and he likes fucking Lance, and spending time with Lance... only thing is, he doesn't kiss. Because kissing means he's in love.

Do not start reading this story if you have Important Stuff to do. Save it for the weekend.

Of my own, I really have to mention A Little Ado, because the kiss is unusually effective; but as that one is ST:TNG I'll also mention a popslash one which is quite cute: JC's Unsatisfactory Vacation>/a>.
pensnest: Lancyn and Ser Chrisfer (Chronicles)
Fantasy AU
- not necessarily swords-and-sorcerers, but something that's not real-world or contemporary.

A Treatise on the Habits of the Greater Blue Horned Dragon by Patchworkdragon was one of the entries for my very first Dragon Challenge, in 2006. It's a fantasy setting but nicely unusual—our five young men each have their own reasons for approaching the dragon, eg Joey wants to show off to a girl, Chris wants it to stop eating his sheep, Lance wants to study it, etc.

Mine: well, my Chronicles of Lancyn and Ser Chrisfer fit the 'fantasy' prompt.
pensnest: the NSYNC boys in red and white (NSYNC group)
Bit of catching up to do!

Day 10: a great OC

There's not a lot of call for original characters in popslash, since we have so many canon characters to play with, but there was one that made a great impression on me in a SeSa story back in 2006. Like a Big Pizza Pie by Sola Fiamma, has a most delightful old lady who quite confounds poor Chris. I think she's wonderful.

For my own, um. As it happens, I've *just* written an OC whom I quite like, but that story is neither popslash nor available to view right now. So... I did have to produce a girlfriend for Nick in Wings would be cool. Alternatively, there's always Justin Junior. Well, maybe not.

Day 11: really hot sex!

I'm going with Toasted by Calico. *fans self*

My own contribution is Audience. I don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to write really hot sex.

Day 12: rare pairing

I really loved Moments when you can't deny what's true by nafs/nafio. It's Nick Carter/Patrick Stump, and I want to listen to the album they create together!

I've done rather a lot of rare pairings. I'm pretty sure that Strangers and Dame are the only Lance Bass/Ian McKellan stories out there.
pensnest: JC looking cheeky and surrounded by shinies (JC sparkles happily)
Threesome or moresome! Because why stop at two sparkly boys or girls when you can have more!

There are quite a lot of moresomes around, but most of them don't have a lot in the way of plot, being All About The Porn. So my pick is The Other Side of the Street by Puszysty, in which Kevin and JC swap bodies (as you do) and everything ends up as a Backstreet/Nsync orgy. Well, it would, obviously. Good stuff!

My (possible) favourite from my own supply is Let's Do the Time Warp Again, featuring Joey as Eddie, Justin as Rocky, and Lance as Columbia.
pensnest: B/w Lance in sunglasses and smirk (Lance exceptionally cool)
A piece that's presented in an unexpected way.

Well, I've just been guffawing over [livejournal.com profile] morgana_st's rec for Day 6, which would have worked perfectly for today, too, but never mind.

The obvious candidate for this particular reccing challenge would have been 'Flesh Mechanic', but I've no idea if it's still around, and it wasn't quite my thing, anyway. Instead, have Yes, we have no bananas (the internet stalkamix) by [personal profile] chalcopyrite from an original by [livejournal.com profile] withdiamonds. It perfectly captures the style on [livejournal.com profile] still_gay and fan gossip in general, and is very clever indeed.

For my own candidate, I present
Backstage,
in which our boys, betwinkled and bemiked
take to the stage once more...
pensnest: Lance Bass looking very smug, caption Tomorrow the world (Lance tomorrow the world)
A crossover with another fandom you knew before you read the story.

Today's award goes to Double or Nothing by Calico, featuring Lance Bass and the Weasley twins. I was a bit croggled by this when first I read it—it must have been at an early stage in my slash-reading life when I was unused to things getting a little more, hmm, interesting! Fred gasped, and heard George gasp in stereo, and by Merlin, Lance looked smug. Lance being smug is a weakness of mine.

As I seem to have been pre-empting other people's recs a bit, I hope this category opens things up more!

My own for this category is Anomaly, in which Lance and Nick unexpectedly turn up on the Enterprise-D.
