Well, so Yuletide authors are revealed! I wrote a Lord Peter Wimsey story, The Preparation of a Gentleman's Nursery, rubbish title but I was very happy with the story that resulted. And my recipient was happy, too, so all is well! Also, I got more kudos on that story than I probably have in total for other stories on AO3 that I wrote (some are under my name because I podficced), which is weird but kinda gratifying.

I've also been back to the story written for me, Before the Deluge by Ione, and have been exploring the author's other works, among which I am delighted to find several Heyer and Austen-derived stories. If you haven't found them and have a yen for some Regency fic (one way or another), I recommend taking a look.

It seems like a good moment to remind myself of what else I wrote during 2021, which turns out to be not very much. These were all written for the fandomgiftbox exchange, which to my sorrow seemed to disintegrate into nothingness. I think I might even have written more had there been a bit more modly encouragement. Still, there resulted these:

Sea-Colored Eyes for [personal profile] turps (Popslash, of course)

Pepsi and Chateauneuf du Pape for xslytherclawx (a Mad Men story which just... arrived, much to my surprise)

And two Star Trek: The Next Generation stories: Stuck in the Big Chair, a Riker story for sixbeforelunch, and An Odd State of Flux, a Data story for River_Song.

A total for the year of a little over 11,000 words, which is not fabulous but is a heck of a lot better than I thought i would manage. The previous year's total of around 30,000 words was more, and hard wrung, but written by expanding a story that already existed.

I'd never written either a Mad Men or a Wimsey story before, so I'm quite pleased to have expanded my fannish vocabulary a bit. Yuletide I declare a personal success, so I'll definitely be having another go, and perhaps a more prolific go, in 2022.

Remix. I know it's self-indulgent, and probably more than ten years overdue, but I noticed a post about Remix meta very recently, and it set me thinking about my own Remix experiences. And Remix in general. And stuff. I don't know whether anyone is interested in talking about the way Remix worked—I don't know if the challenge still happens, I haven't participated for several years—but I'd be interested to hear of outstanding examples of different kinds of story, and of ways of remixing which aren't covered here. I certainly don't claim that I've done every possible type of remix story. In fact, looking at them now, I never managed a really cool re-imagining of any of my remix stories—I see, from this list, that in most cases I've said that I basically rewrote the story with X changed. No grand inspirations, alas!

I have a lowering feeling that other people are much more thoughtful about what they write and why, and set out with the intention of saying something interesting about the source material. However, I've never managed an approach like that—I mostly find that anything I might Say in one of my stories has arrived there without my conscious input. A few exceptions. Likewise, insights into the original story that may have occurred in one of my remix stories were achieved by luck. I suspect that's true of a lot of participants—we look for a story we can work with, and throw ideas at it until something sticks! But there are thoughtful people out there who aim higher....

A lot of writers don't like Remix and don't participate, and that's fair enough. It's always seemed to me more of a shame that people choose not to read Remix stories, and that, I don't really understand. After all, a fresh story is a fresh story, and unless you remember strongly disliking the original, to me it seems like an opportunity to read two stories. And, ideally, compare and contrast them and see what works and what doesn't, though I admit I might be expecting a lot from people who do this for fun, not for the sake of studying the writing. But in my remixing years, it was always rather sad how little acknowledgment the effort of producing a remix story would get. Even in the days when popslash garnered plenty of feedback. I mean, why is that?

PS I haven't generally included links to the stories, though if anyone is interested enough to investigate all or any, I will happily provide them.
pensnest: Justin gurning in close up (Justin Timberlake god of sex)
Justin in a heart T-shirt on Tom and Lorenzo's site. The commenters don't, er, seem to care for the Timberlake, but what I say is, at least there is no visible evidence of that peculiar hairstyle. I am a little concerned that JT has swapped out his usual legs in favour of a shorter pair...

I've been idling away the time making out a list of Stuff We Write in a general way, and wondering just how many of these things I have written (quite a lot, indeed). I invite you to tell me what I have omitted from the list, and/or whether some of the things on it aren't really separate items.

Also, pick one, and I'll tell you whether I've written it. (You can pick something that isn't on the list, if you like.)

ETA some extra suggestions, thanks [livejournal.com profile] morgana_st. I'm not sure whether Angst and H/C quite fit within the same framework as the rest—they are certainly Stuff That We Do, but not quite in the same way, perhaps?

*twitches*

I hate that time between writing a story and posting it. I've just completed my [livejournal.com profile] cockbertbigbang story, and I can't post it until… well, I'm not sure when I'll get to post it, but not until after Camp Sparkle. *twitches* It seems to mean I can't get onto the next story—not that I have a 'next story' necessarily lined up in my head, but still. It probably explains my ability to hit deadlines but not to get things done early—get it done early and I just have to wait longer...

Anybody else find that? Do you want the story posted and read by other people, or don't you mind that much?

There seems to be a meme about song-derived titles going around, so here are mine in rather random order.

stories with titles derived from songs )

Actually a surprisingly small percentage of my stories have song-derived titles. A few are poetry-derived...

Back from an excellent, entertaining and useful sparkly weekend chez [personal profile] nopseud, also featuring [personal profile] ephemera. Notions for MTYG were bandied about, and I also discovered Written? Kitten!, a writing incentive site which really works! How useful it would be to have a boyband version available this time next year to give us real encouragement in our SeSa writing efforts!

At dead of night on Friday (ie probably around 3am Saturday), and before [personal profile] ephemera joined us, [personal profile] nopseud and I were trying to figure out how many of the available pairings we had each written. It was surprisingly hard to remember. I have, in consequence, compiled a List, with additions, and have bolded those I've already written. (They don't, I think, *have* to be slash stories, one or two simply feature these particular two as the main characters rather than as a pairing.) I'm doing quite well.

List of pairings )

Oh, wottheheck, I might as well do that fanfic meme that's going around. Now I can stop filling my mind with Pirates. (Hah. If the music would get out of my skull, I could.)

1. How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?

And the answer is... )

I'm not going to post the remainder of the list, because I'm sure you'll have seen it posted around the place.

On a not quite completely unrelated note, can anyone tell me if Berkeley Hunt, scourge of fangirls, is on LJ or DW anywhere? She was my very first beta, and if she has a journal she'd be awesome to read.
pensnest: Calvin not enjoying his homework (Calvin blehh)
I seem to have scattered last year's written output about quite a bit—some of the things I did were in a new fandom, others belong in the Bouquet series, so they aren't chronologically stored on my website. Decided to have a round-up here, to keep things straight.

I think this is a complete list. )
pensnest: Octavian from Rome looking sceptical, caption Hmm... (Rome Hmm from Octavian)
And to get myself back into the fannish swing of things again, here's a meme I've seen here and there, any questions?

I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" or "Tell me about Character A?" That isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!

I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.

And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do working.

Ask me questions!

What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about xyz, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? And so on.
