The SeSa experience is different every year. For my first one, in 2005 (when it was DWNOGA), I looked around in confusion at all the SeSa angst, because I had an ideal assignment and a recipient whose stories I had read. Yes, then the following year I had to write a new (to me) pairing for Torch. And last year, I had to produce a Brian story, though I was not in a good place to sympathise with Brian's political beliefs.

Anyway.

This year was yet another different experience. )
pensnest: Brian Littrell has a beautiful smile (Brian Smile)
Well, this year, I wrote Brian Angst. If you did not figure out which one was my story, I'm not at all surprised—I hardly recognised it myself! But my recipient wanted h/c and Brian being comforted by Nick (the other way round would have come much more easily, I think). I also had a problem getting going with this story, despite some useful ideas emerging from the MTYG weekend with [personal profile] nopseud and [personal profile] chalcopyrite, because I am pretty certain that Brian Littrell voted for Trump, and I am surprisingly invested in Do Not Want there.

However, in the end I managed to fulfil the brief, and achieved Happy Recipient, which is what MTYG is really about. \o/

A big thank-you to [personal profile] sperrywink, who pointed out to me that there really had to be a kiss, and thus prodded me into a very much improved ending.

And a big thank-you to [livejournal.com profile] ninjetti75 for writing ..And His Sidekick, Sprinkles for me, a delightful Trickyfish with an established relationship and lots of down-to-earth and fondly entertaining details. I am very pleased with it. You should read it.

As usual, the crop of stories includes a very good proportion of fine fics. I recced three of them yesterday, but if you are still into popslash, or if you have a nostalgic yen to read a few stories from a fandom you used to love, give them a try.

So, MTYG authors are revealed. And I can thank [livejournal.com profile] raynedanser for my delightful story, A Rose by Any Other Name (Will Still Tear up Your Couch Until Properly Trained) It's a long term relationship (yay!) in which Chris comes home with an entirely perfect pet for Lance. It's quite charming.

Thriller )
Briefly, three favourites—I could have picked more but decided to ration myself:

mess is mine by ullman Exactly my kind of Trickyfish, with sex and snark and boys being adorable and sidling into admitting they love each other. Lots of great lines, too.

The dialogue in The Devil and AJ McLean by nopseud is just glorious, and I shrieked with mirth at several points.

And Strange(r) by ocelot summer is a beautiful version of the ‘one of the boys is an angel’ notion, quite poetic and with a wonderful emotional line throughout.

MTYG author reveal!

I wrote… )

I can also thank GlitterDragon for writing my story, Heading West with an oblivious Lance going on his merry and very gay way, and Chris pining very much long-term and missing his chance at every possible opportunity except the last one, which was basically exactly what I asked for. *throws confetti*

It continues to astonish me that MTYG produces such wonderful stories every time—I think those of you who participated/read them will agree that there were some really super offerings. I think my favourite was All I Want For Christmas, partly because it is hilarious in every way, partly because I could just imagine her recipient's glee as he read it, and quite a lot because I was present at the theoretical birth of the turkipede and am *so* glad it—they—made it into the story.

We seem to be having quite a bit of Weather today. Not **Extreme Weather**, but an apparently random selection veering from heavy rain to bright sunshine and a completely blue sky, back again to the rain, and now the sky is pale and clear again. All between ten this morning and now, three-thirty. No wonder we British talk about the weather a lot.

The MTYG Author reveals are up, so you can now see that I wrote two stories: clear my eyes and doin' this tonight, or maybe in the morning. It took me quite a while to figure out how 'clear my eyes' was to end, and I did wonder whether I should produce two alternatives, but mercifully the story worked itself out as I was writing it—just as well, as it was a wee bit late getting submitted. The second story was comparatively easy, as I just had to review what the various guys said about the VMAs thing, and then let Joey get drunk and do the job for me. Much fun!

It was Randomling who wrote the big picture for me, continuing my fortunate run of lovely SeSa stories. It's an AU in which Lance and Chris are in a long term relationship (purrrrr) and Chris manages to pull out the necessary stops to be the romantic Lance needs him to be, and I'm very happy with it.

Cheers to everyone who participated, as writer, reader, feedbacker, and especially to Nopseud, heroic Elf-in-Chief.

[personal profile] ephemera asked me for this, and as she has been closely involved with much of my Secret Santa experience, one way or another, it seems entirely appropriate.

About this year's MTYG: I always look forward to the "guess the author" posts, but I don't really feel it would be fair for me to try to participate, these days, as I'm one of the Elves and have the chance—actually, the duty—to check through the stories beforehand to ensure they meet the challenge requirements. So I get to see who wrote what… and although by now I can't remember most of those details, I probably have a lot more of a clue than I ought.

So do, please, have a go at guessing. It ought to be much easier than usual this year, as you have fewer than two dozen authors to choose from. The MTYG Discuss guessing post is here on Dreamwidth or here on LJ.

On to my meme for the day: [personal profile] letterboys asked for my 'Patronus Memory'.

But the thing is, I don't think I have one.

I have quite a few very happy memories—when Beast proposed, for instance, which was quite the surprise; and when Bun was born, looking into her disapproving dark eyes for the first time; and when Boy was born and I looked at him and burst out laughing, for he was frowning and looked just like his grandpa. My wedding day might be an excellent memory if I could actually remember it, but most of it was a blur of smiling so hard my cheeks ached, and being photographed a lot. I can tell you roughly what happened, but the memory isn't particularly vivid. I probably have more detailed recall of my sister's wedding.

I can remember getting my A-Level results, which got me into Cambridge. I can remember graduating (though that was mostly relief!). I can remember my children graduating. Hmm.

I have good memories made with fellow fans. Awesomely fun conversation at first con. The Lava Lamp Reading. The first Camp Sparkle, and subsequents. Backstreet concerts.

I spose this means I've basically had a very happy life, which I have. No Patronus memory, though.
pensnest: JC and AJ together (Letterboys)
It occurs to me, somewhat belatedly, that I haven't done a 'post-SeSa' post. So here it is.

I must thank the lovely [livejournal.com profile] ullman for my wonderful, hilarious story Orange is the happiest color. An awesome job, which made me laugh aloud. Particularly awesome since I have modly insight and am pretty sure it had to be a very late pinch-hit—though I promise, I took great care not to peek at who was doing the job.

I wrote It's Cool, it's Hot, It's a Relationship, It's Not, another take on Letterboys with a side order of Awesome Kevin. Not surprisingly, it probably has quite a bit in common with my previous MTYG Letterboys story "Collaboration". Interesting to note that I was one of very few people to write an actual sex scene this year. Wonder why that is.

I had a very straightforward, entirely do-able request, from a recipient who seemed to want to read the kind of story I like to write, so I thought it would be easy... and it was surprisingly hard to figure out where to start, perhaps because I'd already written my 'ur-Letterboys' story (for JM!). A request with a bump in the road—something that I'd never have thought of writing, if not for the request—is easier to make original (after the initial disbelief, outrage and hair-tearing). Like "post-apocalyptic vampires with romance" or a High School AU featuring two pairings which age-wise, didn't work as they could not have been contemporaries in High School.

I'm most grateful to [personal profile] nopseud for helping me to figure out what the hell to write...

Huh. It was back in 2007 that I last wrote a SeSa story (actually, two) that didn't involve Backstreet. All my more recent ones have featured Boys, although some have been crossover pairings, and in a couple there has been an Nsync pairing as well. I suppose that may be a feature of the shrinking entry pool for MTYG?
pensnest: Baby Lance and Chris, caption Up to no good (Trickyfish up to no good)
1. MTYG STORIES ARE UP.

2. OMG. My story is *hilarious*. I've just re-read it and giggled just as much the second time.

3. Have a very merry Christmas, people.
pensnest: Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick, caption Perfect Opposites (Trickyfish perfect opposites)
So I can now thank Ocelot summer for writing my splendid story, The Kirkpatrick Guide to Aging Gracefully, which I may possibly have squee'd about once or twice already. Ahem. Great stuff.

I wrote Wings Would Be Cool for a recipient who seems to have taken no further part in the challenge after signing up for it. Ah well. I was charmed by the requested pairings, one my OTP and the other a pairing I'd never written (and therefore an interesting challenge) and then thrown by the request for a HS AU. As I've never been to high school, I was *extremely grateful* to [personal profile] nopseud, who suggested guardian angels. (And thanks to both [personal profile] nopseud and [profile] snarkyllama for the betas.)

[personal profile] fleurrochard guessed correctly, and therefore gets a ficlet, uh, soon. It's funny—I always think I give myself away in my writing, because my stories seem so *me*, but I can seldom identify anyone else's, so it shouldn't be any surprise that most people don't guess at all, or get it wrong.

MTYG

pensnest: bright-eyed baby me (Default)
MTYG authors being now revealed, I can see it was Hurricanemegan who wrote my wonderful story, Barking Mad. She also wrote my 2007 story, Year of the Bull, so she obviously knows exactly what I like! Thanks again - xxx!

My own story, The Pussycat and the Porcupine, written for Jacie, was supposed to be C-Bass with a side of Chris/Howie, a reward for Chris playing Cupid for his friends. However, Chris took over a bit (he does that) and it ended up being definitely a two-pairing story, and given the structure, C-Bass was probably the second pairing, even though I hadn't intended it that way. I had quite a struggle writing it, and probably rewrote from scratch every section in the first half of the story at least once, but by the end I knew where it was going—and the puppies arrived, and then Howie came up with the porcupine idea (so I had to go back and make Chris more prickly) and it all worked out.

The writing experience was quite a contrast to last year, because my recipient, like me, didn't ask for anything very specific. I remember my wrath last year because my recipient asked for post-apocalyptic vampires, which it would never have occurred to me to write—yet it was a great challenge to do something so different from what I generally do. This year's recipient request was more general (I didn't really get enough cuddling into the story, I think), and while in many ways that makes things easier, it also means I had to think 'what shall I write?' rather than 'how shall I write this?'. A different experience.

So I'm thinking, perhaps next year I should give a specific prompt? Hmm, except that I've been really lucky with MTYG stories so far—only my first SeSa year was disappointing, back in 2005, since then I've had a really good run of stories received, so maybe my requests are fine...

What do you prefer your recipient to do? Is it easier or harder to write for someone you know quite well? And who else has had a specific request you found *very* challenging?

[personal profile] rikes guessed my story correctly, so—what do you want me to write for you?
pensnest: Niobe shouting Cock! (Rome Cock!)
Now that the MTYG authors are revealed, I have to say I'm a fan of Ullman, who wrote *three* stories including my own gift, Juncture, which I like very much indeed. Her other Trickyfish offering is 'Sparkly Souls Slow Dancing', otherwise known as the one in which Lance glows in the dark, which is my other favourite of this year's Lance/Chris fics.

My own story was for this world to be unbroken, a post-apocalyptic vampire AU AJ/Kevin story, which I imagine nobody would have expected of me! I confess to being utterly boggled by the request for quite some time, as post-apocalyptic anything is So Not Me, and I don't really Do Vampires. (The AJ/Kevin, fortunately, seemed quite doable, I'd sort of had a dress rehearsal for that last year as it was [personal profile] letterboys's alternative pairing.) Also, this time the recipient was someone I don't know, really, and there wasn't a lot to be gleaned by stalking her LJ—it was a quite different experience from last year, but it's all part of the SeSa fun, I spose.

Luckily I had [personal profile] nopseud and [personal profile] ephemera to offer insanely cracked ideas advise me. I think at one stage I was planning to write four different endings, a pick-your-own conclusion adventure, but happily the story that eventually emerged had other ideas. Our Backstreet Concert weekend did indeed see the birth of a SeSa story, and I mourn the loss of the original title, The Town of Tiny Vampires. This was not the story I wrote, but I was charmed to see its metamorphosis into a sprawling JuNi epic. Hee.

Well. A huge Thank You to [personal profile] nopseud for being my Story Doctor again, and figuring out the major logical flaw in time for me to put it right. Many thanks also to [personal profile] joeysdramaqueen and [personal profile] llamabitchyo for the betas and smoking out of non-American language. In the end, I found I rather liked the story. It's quite fun figuring out what day-to-day life is like in a post-apocalyptic world where there are roving vampires! And it's always good to have a go at something you've not done before.

In other news, I also participated in I Saw 3 Ships, and am pleased to be able to announce that you can now read a Nick/Lance/Chris threesome story written for me here. Sadly it is the only popslash story there—whoever it was who lured me into signing up, you've presumably figured out that I didn't write for you! I had, perforce, to write something *else*, in a fandom I haven't written in before, which was an interesting struggle. Incidentally, there is a marvellous Top Gear story in the list, unlikely as that sounds. I ended up watching a couple of Top Gear programmes over the Christmas period, and, well. Yes.

MTYG!

Right! MTYG authors have now been revealed, so I can admit to writing 'Collaboration' for JM. A bit of a challenge, and it gave me quite a few worried moments as I flailed around wondering when exactly to set it, but after a certain amount of struggling (trying to figure out the lyrics to the AJ/JC collaboration 'Love Crazy' was Not Easy, and I couldn't very well ask the Queen of Letterboys...) I ended up being rather pleased with it.

The reveal brings the usual collection of, Aha, I thought so! and Of course, why didn't I realise and Well I never! reactions. Incidentally, I'm impressed by the quality of the guessing on the official MTYG guess-the-author post! And next year, if I remember, I shall use a completely different system for defining breaks in the story. Hah!

I can also thank the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] chalcopyrite for writing my fabulous story, 'Prove Them Wrong'.

I'll be replying to feedback received, but not (probably) tomorrow, as tomorrow I restore the brats to university and, possibly, prowl around Norwich for a while.
pensnest: bright-eyed baby me (Joey Yay!)
Yay for MTYG! And a wholehearted THANK YOU to everyone who made it happen, with particular approbation for [livejournal.com profile] archie_gremlin, who probably doesn't even read the stories... The rest of you lovely peeps have the pleasure of knowing that you occasioned more than 80 fresh new popslash fics, and of reading them!

Anyway. My experience this year )

Yes, story authors are up, and I'm fascinated to see who wrote what. I guess the least surprising is that it was Merry who wrote 'Buoyancy'.

Mine were The Little Dustbuster That Could and The Sprinkle Fairy. Happily nobody guessed these, so I owe no ficlets. Many thanks (again) to beta readers [livejournal.com profile] nopseud, [livejournal.com profile] joyfulseeker and [livejournal.com profile] msktrnanny. If you want material to mock me for months, you can go behind the cut and read the sequence of woe... but it's mostly for my own reference. Meanwhile, thanks for the feedback - I will reply properly tomorrow!

Oh boy. Yep, so DWNOGA authors are up, and I can reveal that I was lucky enough to be asked to write Trickyfish (yay!) (and added a side order of Chris/Nick, after a fashion), thank the SeSa stars... It's called Prize, and will soon be filling the Birthday prompt in my fanfic100 table. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ephemera_pop, [livejournal.com profile] nopseud, [livejournal.com profile] joyfulseeker and [livejournal.com profile] sola_fiamma for various kinds of beta work (and encouragement) which improved things so much from my initial draft.
