pensnest: very young Chris and Joey (Choey)

So, MTYG authors are revealed. And I can thank [livejournal.com profile] raynedanser for my delightful story, A Rose by Any Other Name (Will Still Tear up Your Couch Until Properly Trained) It's a long term relationship (yay!) in which Chris comes home with an entirely perfect pet for Lance. It's quite charming.

I was tasked this year with writing for [livejournal.com profile] luxshine, who is notoriously partial to zombies, so zombies it had to be. Now, I don't do zombies. My only previous acquaintance with zombies has been through popslash stories written by [livejournal.com profile] nopseud, so it's probably appropriate that Nopseud was the person who introduced me to Shaun of the Dead. Awesome film! I took Copious Notes throughout. Lux and [personal profile] ephemera both recognised the film's influence, which was considerable!

Another big thank you to [personal profile] sperrywink for the beta and encouragement.

It was, of course, a Choey story (Trickytone, surely?), which suited me well because there isn't enough Choey in the world, and I haven't written that much of it, so it felt as though I had fresh things to say. I did toy with the idea of including Kevin as a bit more of a distraction than he turned out to be, but the idea didn't really work. He was a useful conspirator instead.

There's actually a list of media associated with this story. Beyond Shaun of the Dead, we have:

Castle which had some influence over how I wrote the ending (there's an episode where something comparable happens, though I can't remember what it's called or which season it is in)
Joey, singing ‘Suddenly Seymour’ from Little Shop of Horrors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObRkZchM9PE; not from an actual production, but definitely worth a look. There is also ‘Grow for Me’ (audio only, alas) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL4R5V8QcxQ which I believe was from the LSOH production he was in.
The Dentist song from LSOH (alas, without Kevin Richardson, but I thought this version was very funny): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_K7inol1Gw
You may also want to check out this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=848mvstoLdA for a bit of zombie atmosphere.
Plus: http://popmacros.livejournal.com/15445.html the photo which inspired Lance's zombie look, though I suspect he would have dispensed with the frilled shirt; and, I did a search for Zombie Party Food Ideas, which turned up some inspiring results. Take a look.

Inevitably, I struggled my way through quite a lot of the story, trying to figure out how to balance the zombies with everything else, but I have to say, I don't think I've ever written the ending of a story with such *glee* before. I could see it so clearly in my head—I hope it came across. There are sheaves of explanations in my head for how everything was done, which don't need to be part of the story because, really, as long as I'm satisfied they *could* have been done, that's all that matters.

So that was Thriller.

Briefly, three favourites—I could have picked more but decided to ration myself:

mess is mine by ullman Exactly my kind of Trickyfish, with sex and snark and boys being adorable and sidling into admitting they love each other. Lots of great lines, too.

The dialogue in The Devil and AJ McLean by nopseud is just glorious, and I shrieked with mirth at several points.

And Strange(r) by ocelot summer is a beautiful version of the ‘one of the boys is an angel’ notion, quite poetic and with a wonderful emotional line throughout.
