Feb. 25th, 2020 10:16 pmI'm listening to 'Sense and Sensibility' this week, and have just heard the part where Willoughby turns up and Elinor has to listen to him explaining why he really isn't that bad at all. *So* much self-justification. And I thought, I wonder what Captain Awkward would have said to him, if he had written to her? Or what Elinor might have thought, if Jane Austen had had the chance to read Captain Awkward!

There is blossom! Lovely, delicate white blossom on the bushes/trees between us and the building site next door, which is much appreciated, and more of it along the route to the gym, along with very delicate, very pale pink blossom (not the big fat pink pompoms which will come along in a few weeks' time). Plus the first tinted spears of magnolia blossoms. It does not seem like a year since the magnolias were last in bloom. I am getting old. But, there are daffodils lining the green by the river, and snowdrops and crocuses here and there, and our giant snowdrops-on-steroids have sent up a few flowers as well. Even the beech tree is beginning to be laced with leaf buds. And the squirrels are getting frisky.

Sadly, I have a nasty sore throat. Particularly sad, as we had an all-day mixed chorus rehearsal on Sunday, and I sat and made notes for most of it (also dealt with getting the water hot for breaktime tea and coffee, and was Generally Useful that way). Did manage to sing a bit in the session after the first coffee break, which was good—somehow it is a lot easier to get the music stuck properly in my head by singing it on the risers, than by studying it at home. The throat protested after lunch, though, so I was back to note-taking.
Chorus is sounding good! The deceptive simplicity of the advice from our coach at the previous session is really taking hold. After years and years of singing lessons and Using My Diaphragm and so forth, to be told 'stand like this' and 'breathe like this' and 'relax' and being able to do all those things… somehow, it made the singing come out without touching the sides. And it's working for everybody!

Sable was doing her "I am Prey, Chase Me" thing earlier, which doesn't usually end well for her as I think Fluffy is the more capable fighter, when it gets to that stage. However, Sable did position herself most strategically under the hall radiator, so that Fluffy could not grab her by the neck.
Cats.
