Have you considered tring those electric-shock collars used for training dogs? I've always thought they would come in handy in many situations.

ETA: The key in my atlas (published by American Map) says:

- blue shield = interstate.
- white shield = US route.
- white oval = State or Provincial route.
- white square = County or other route (just for completeness).
