pensnest: Ian Lawless from the fragrance ad, smirking adorably (Flawless)

I seem to be caught up with the idea of memes telling me what to post, so here's an end-of-year list of 32 questions which I've seen around my Reading list.

1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
I grew courgettes, and pumpkins, and sweetcorn! There were also tomatoes, in large quantity but not very successful, somehow. And butternut squashes that came up really tiny for some reason. However! The gardening was, overall, a success, and I shall do it again.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Well, sort of. I have kept my resolution not to buy myself chocolate, and shall continue to do so. I don't know that I did noticeably more podfic, which is a pity. I enjoy it… I think I did post a bit more than I'd done in 2012, but I dare say there is room for improvement.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
Didn't go anywhere this year.

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
I wouldn't mind a cure for arthritis. I don't have it badly, but it's only going to get worse.

7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
16th April. 30 years married!
6th June. My birthday, when my BFF took me to see "The Book of Mormon" and out to dinner.
16th October. My Beast's birthday, when I took him to see "The Book of Mormon", and we were burgled.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Probably the gardening. Alternatively, managing to direct a good show in the teeth of plague, weather and a recalcitrant MD.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I couldn't write. I made some very feeble efforts to expand on my favourite story from last year, and couldn't get anywhere. It wasn't until October that I began to be able to put words together again. I hate that.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
No. My Beast, though, got a prolapsed disc and was quite miserable for a while.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I've indulged in some very beautiful yarns. My queue of yarns waiting to be knitted into something doesn't actually resemble my queue of patterns I want to knit, which is a pity.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My brats! Bun has switched to a new job, Boy became employed and is due to switch to a better job in a few days' time (both within the company), and they've also done an accounting course with an eye to professional advancement in future.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled?
My government, mostly. My MP is a waste of space, certainly.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Yarn!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Redemption, Camp Sparkle, Nine Worlds.

16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
Don't think there is one.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you (a) happier or sadder, (b) thinner or fatter? (c) richer or poorer?
(a) Probably about the same, and slightly less stressed
(b) About the same
(c) About the same

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Writing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastinating and wasting time on websites.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
My children came home for a week, and my brother-in-law joined us for the few days immediately around Christmas. We watched a few things on TV together, had some unexpected but good conversations, played a couple of fun games, and had more chocolate than was strictly necessary.

21. Did you fall in love in 2013?
No

22. What was your favourite TV programme?
I… don't know. I can't seem to remember which things I've watched on telly (very few) and which I've seen on DVD. Of current stuff, probably Downton Abbey. I'm not quite sure how up to date we are on The Good Wife, which is excellent.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No. Not really into hating people.

24. What was the best book you read?
I dunno, but I very much enjoyed 'Captain Vorpatril's Alliance' by Lois McMaster Bujold.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Book of Mormon! Which is awesome.

26. What did you want and get?
I expect I got most of what I wanted. I'm incredibly fortunate.

27. What did you want and not get?
I'd wanted for years to direct Guys and Dolls, which my amateur theatre company will be putting on early next year. They asked someone else.

28. What was your favourite film of this year?
I think, maybe, 'Sunshine on Leith'. So charming.

29. What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
My son started working, and moved into a house with nice, moderately sociable people. He's doing nicely at work, where they are helpful in making accommodation for his AS, and he's learning to talk to people. It's such a relief!

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
I have been trying to become a person who wears scarves and shawls, because I have knitted so many nice ones, and am going to knit so many more. I can't seem to bear to give most of them away. Also, after the burglary I reorganised my jewellery, and I'm trying to accessorise a bit more so as to make use of it.
I have also found that the current(ish - it's probably past by now, I'm never current with fashion) thing for short dresses and leggings works rather well for me. My legs are quite shapely, although large. So I have recently acquired several such dresses, and keep looking thoughtfully at more. It is incredibly rare for me to have a *choice* of clothes that kinda suit me and that I like wearing, so I'm enjoying it.

31. What kept you sane?
Lots and lots of cuddles.

32. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Eh, can't think of one.
If you don't have an account you can create one now.
