I fear the blessed Jane, via Mr Darcy, has a lot to answer for in this respect. He seems to have been the template for That Type. Still, Mr Darcy confined his unpleasant aspect to not dancing with people, being hard to please, having a very high opinion of himself, and keeping his sister's business private. Mr Sidney Parker outright asks Charlotte to comment on people and then wallops her for doing so. Etc, etc.
