Still, books. I can do books, I think.

1) Total number of books owned Gawd. 120' in tv room, plus another 20-25' downstairs, plus box of stuff kept in bedroom, plus - oh, dammit, there are books in every room in the house except the bathroom I don't use. I have no idea. Not enough.

2) The last book I bought Now, this is an oddity, it's called 'Singularity Sky' and is by Charles Stross, and I believe it is actual SF, but I haven't read it and he hasn't read it yet either, so dunno whether it was a good buy or not.

3) The last book I read 'The Curse of Chalion' by Lois McMaster Bujold, which I will happily recommend to any sentient being who might be interested. Am currently working very slowly through Richard Dawkins' magnificent tome 'The Ancestor's Tale'.

4) Five books that mean a lot to me As long as this doesn't have to mean 'the five I would save in case of conflagration', the very thought of which has me hyperventilating, okay. In no particular order,
(i) 'Starship Troopers' by Robert Heinlein, as a sort of general representation of my teenage I-like-science-fiction phase;
(ii) 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Persuasion' by Jane Austen, because I will always adore these books and can never quite decide which is my favourite but fortunately, as I have them handsomely bound in a mighty volume along with 'Emma' and 'Mansfield Park', I can count them as one choice, heh;
(iii) 'The Selfish Gene' by Richard Dawkins, which sprouted a whole new category onto my library shelves, and is brilliant;
(iv) 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time' by Mark Haddon, because it shows me how a different kind of person thinks, and because it also shows me that my son's version of Asperger Syndrome could have been a whole lot more difficult to deal with than it is;
(v) 'The Heir of Redcliffe' by Charlotte M Younge, a Victorian weepie which is probably my favourite wallow ever, even though if I'm not in a wallowing mood it makes me snigger. Also, it actually reminds me of something - 10th wedding anniversary trip to Bath, and discovering this book in a second-hand book shop. Which is nice.

Well. I obviously have a fair bit in common with [livejournal.com profile] buddleia, so let's see how [livejournal.com profile] turloughishere and [livejournal.com profile] deliberatehips go with it. Consider yourselves tagged, gentlefolks.

Meanwhile - am getting hang of lj tags. Go me.
