pensnest: pumpkin and other veg in autumnal colours (Pumpkin)
My sweetcorn has started to grow! Well, I say 'my', it's actually the plants I bought at the allotment open day a few weeks back. The sweetcorn I grew from seed has remained 'dwarfed', it it has grown to about a foot high and stopped. Though several of these little stalks are making cobs. I think this must be because for about a month I didn't have anywhere to plant them, so they stayed in pots for a lot longer than they should have done. Next year I shall have proper sweetcorn.

The tomatoes are flourishing at last! Lots of green tomatoes on the various plants, lots of flowers yet to be turned into tomatoes. I fed them yesterday. (The four I gave my Bun a while back, plus a self-seeded interloper, are also flourishing.)

The pumpkins (two of the three) are looking healthy and happy, and have pumpkinlets attached to them. Ought I to limit the number of pumpkins? I'm not looking for Pumpkins Of Grandeur, so I'm thinking I can just let them grow. The yellow courgettes are flourishing (three out of four) and the two green ones have decided they are going to live. It remains to be seen whether they will get around to producing.

There are several bean plants growing. I spent a while yesterday putting up supports for the newest to emerge. It will be interesting to see what actually grows—for reasons past understanding the Landscapers seem to have removed my carefully-written markers. I'm not sure whether the hopeful little plants emerging between the courgettes are spinach or kale. Then again, it probably doesn't matter much!

And the rhubarb, ripped untimely from its giant pot and replanted into a proper bed, has decided it might as well get on with it. I was fully expecting it to sulk for at least a year, but no, there are new leaves a-growing.

Overall, quite satisfactory, even though squirrels/birds seem to have devoured *all* the apples. Greedy blighters. I shall have to invest in some nets, or fruit sleeves, or something.

We also bought a new fountain... thing, which is a set of metal leaves on copper stalks, so that water trickles from one to the next. Beast found a solar pump, and we set it in place yesterday in the pond. It works!

I have to figure out places for my two huge pots, for the spinning-on-a-pole decorative thing I couldn't resist buying, and for the large mirror which has been in the garden for years waiting for a place to be. Well, they'll have to wait a while. But my efforts with the hose have not been wasted. Even some of the grass seed is turning into grass.
