I spent about three hours today painting Union Jacks onto cheeks. And hands. Also, crowns, with eyelash-glue-adhered 'jewels'. It was our Diamond Jubilee Celebration Street Party, and I'd volunteered myself for face painting. A good call, for every under-21 year old wanted some painted adornment (prize for 'most taxing' goes to the young man who asked for a Union Jack in the shape of Great Britain - it turns out I can do England+Wales but have very little idea of the shape of Scotland), so I was busy from arrival until I demanded a food break, and then intermittently during mealtime and after.

The party seems to have been a great success, and miraculously, the rain stopped before official starting time, and has not so far begun again. We even had blue skies for the later part of the afternoon. Perishing cold, mind, but it could certainly have been worse. (Yesterday's River Pageant would have been *stunning* in bright sunshine.) There was a veritable mountain of food, and an array of desserts that had me wishing for greater capacity. We now have two half cheesecakes in the fridge, 'cause I bought too much cheese for the one I'd committed to make for the party, and made an extra one for us - and of course, not all my party cheesecake got et. Also more potato salad than two human beings can reasonably be expected to eat before it gets icky, but that's unlikely to bother us.

There are still bass throbbings, but we left a couple of hours ago, as the Backstreet Boys informed us that they wanted it that way.

Glad to hear your party was a success! Watched a bit of the River Pageant on the BBC website, and it looked quite impressive.

I meant to watch the beginning, with the rowed and paddled boats, but there was a bit of recap and it did look impressive. A lot of discipline throughout the pageant, to keep so many boats so close together but at safe distances.
