Girls' Night Out
Jun. 16th, 2005 10:07 amMy best friend took me out last night. A belated birthday present, and one which we've agreed will be a tradition - after all, there comes a time when there's no point giving actual presents any more, but a night at the theatre is a joy forever. Plus we don't get together very often these days - she is ever so high-powered(!) and I seem to acquire Stuff To Do - so it was great to have a catch-up. Anyway, we went to the National to see 'The UN Inspector', a modernised and necessarily free translation of Gogol's 'The Government Inspector'. A lot of laughs, plus some very uncomfortable moments. Far from subtle stuff, but well worth while. I felt a bit sorry for the actors, most of whom spent practically all their time shouting, hope they have good throat sweets!
Shall have to get act together to provide another cultural summer for the brats. Last year we saw Shakespeares at The Globe, Regent's Park Theatre, and Stratford, plus a bunch of other stuff. This year, maybe 'Henry IV' at the National, and 'Billy Elliot' also looks worthwhile.
