Snowflake Challenge 2016 - Day 1

In your own space, talk about why you are doing the Fandom Snowflake Challenge? What drew you to it as a participant? What do you hope to accomplish by doing these challenges? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.


I’ve done the Fandom Snowflake Challenge before, and it always gives me a chance to think about Stuff, fannish or more general. I like to ramble on, and nowadays it seems to be harder to get conversations going on Dreamwidth (or LJ), and I miss the fannish conversations that used to happen, so this is a chance to talk, and perhaps to discover interesting new voices among the other participants.

Oh my God. You write popslash!! I got started in fandom in 2001 reading NSync/BSB/Britney stuff. I didn't know people still wrote in popslash - so awesome! – definitely going to check your stuff out :-)

We still have our Secret Santa story exchange, even - although there are a *lot* fewer participants than in the fandom's heyday.

For my own stuff, try www.pensnest.co.uk, which gives the stories in (more or less) chronological order of writing. The fandom, and the boys, in 2005 were quite different to what they were in, say, 2012!

Sadly it's true I blame Tumblr but at least there are still plenty of fannish comms around at DW/LJ even if the overall conversations are fewer. And yes, maybe you can connect with new people via this challenge :)

I continue to be baffled by the omnipresence of Tumblr, surely an *awful* site for fannish interaction? Ah, well. Here, we can talk.

I'm particularly glad of fancake for a regular hit of recs.

Yes to all of that! It's such a miss.

Of course, it helps so much to have an active fandom that isn't losing acolytes to something newer! But I'm sure we can all share aspects of our fannishness, even when we don't care about the particulars.

The trouble with being a fan of something on TV is that eventually, it ends, and the trouble with Real Life is that it goes on instead of staying where it is supposed to!

(From the Snowflake Challenge.) I like fannish stuff, but you're right; things are a lot quieter than they were during the heyday on LJ. (That rhymes. Um. :D )

Conversations definitely don't seem to happen so much as they used to.

The lack of fannish conversation kind of makes me sad too. I was never good at taking part but I loved reading what was out there and really miss it.

I miss those conversations too. Twitter is no good for my brain, and though I enjoy tumblr, it is isolating, which is pretty much the opposite of what fandom *is*. So yes - yay for this challenge, and the hope that it can re-kindle those convos and connections.

I feel the loss of the Metafandom comunity, which was quite a wild ride at times but was also a really good place for the broad scale conversations. And with so many fans emigrated away from journals and towards Tumblr, it has got harder to have the conversations here - where they ought to be!

I definitely learned a lot from fandom when that kind of thing used to happen, even though I didn't participate much in the serious stuff either.

Yeah, I continue to be baffled by fandom's love affair with Tumblr. I thought it was an awesome way to share pics and gifs, and a terrible way to share stories and conversation. Fans are weird!
