Odd how the time goes by with me only writing mental updates to my journal instead of letting my fingers do the working. Oh well. I aten't ded.

Mega breakfast this morning, for my Beast was off to sing at a Festival Fun Day or some such elsewhere in the county. As he was unlikely to acquire much in the way of lunch, we had sausages, black pudding and beer-and-treacle-cured* bacon from our local, award-winning butcher, eggs, mushrooms, baked beans and toast, and in consequence wanted little else to eat for the rest of the day. Beast has been very busy with singouts of late, sang his first mini-solo last night(!) and is performing with the chorus at the Norfolk Show twice this week. The men's chorus has a lot of demands on its time, but is not handicapped by having an MD who requires most of them to be able to show up for every occasion.

Not sure what else I've done. It has been sunny, so my house plants are on vacation on the patio, enjoying sunshine and showers as they come. Seems to be working out. My sweetcorn, broccoli, kale, beans, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes have ALL been eaten into oblivion, and I think it is too late to attempt to plant replacements** now that the giant star of death has turned up to fry a few of the slugs. It is so disappointing. Last year the crop was erratic, but I was able to trot to the far end of the garden and see whether there were beans and courgettes enough for a meal for quite a while, as usually, there were. Well. The rhubarb is still okay, there may be raspberries (if birds and squirrels do not get them first), there are blackcurrants changing colour, and the gooseberry bushes are still alive, if not precisely thriving. But, dammit. I am sticking to my resolve not to use up my late FIL's slug pellets, but I may yet go on a killing spree with a selection of skewers, and offer slug kebabs to the local blackbirds.

I'm procrastinating. I have the opening of the story-after-next of the Chronicles buzzing in my head, and I really ought to write the next story first. Gah.

* a mistake, we feel. Regular smoked back next time

Go, writing brain, go!

The slugs sound most frustrating - at least the squirrels provide entertainment as well as eating things that shouldn't! Can they be tempted to drown themselves in beer?

I hope Beast is enjoying his singing (congrats on the solo!) and it isn't too toasty at the Show.

It sometimes helps to place a ring of freshly pulled up weeds round (but never touching ) vulnerable young squashes. The slugs go for them first, and the squash gets a brief breather to toughen up.

Your breakfast sounds delicious! I remember having black pudding at a hotel in Scotland many years ago. We should have a proper English breakfast some day at Camp.

Congratulations to Beast's first solo!

That's so sad to hear about your veggies. Slugs should all die!!

All the good luck with your writing!!
