New Year

Happy New Year, everyone!

I seem to have presented myself with New Year Resolutions for the last, well, at least three years, so why change the habit now?

It seems I did quite well on last year's resolutions, which is a good sign. I maintained the "don't buy myself chocolate" thing for another year, slightly assisted by the vast quantities available at and around Camp, which enabled me to eat it without too much guilt. I think my tastes have changed somewhat: I find myself looking for less sweet desserts, these days, when dessert is an option. This is probably due to not eating lots of cheap, sweet chocolate, and must be good. So resolution number one is"

1. Don't buy myself chocolate.

The second resolution was to eat better, and again, I did do this. There have been organic veg deliveries and quality meat deliveries from Abel and Cole for quite a lot of the year, which have meant that I sometimes got faced with Unexpected Vegetables (like celeriac) and had to learn new things. (Turns out I like celeriac.) I also managed to grow various things—tomatoes, sweetcorn, courgettes (slightly disappointing crop this time), squashes (three splendid pumpkins and a dainty little butternut squash), dwarf beans, raspberries (om nom nom!) and rhubarb. All organic, because I'm not going to pamper them with any fertiliser that doesn't come off the compost heap.

Not quite sure how growing veg is going to go, this year, as we are hoping to move right in the middle of the sowing season, but I will definitely try. It's so nice being able to go out into the garden and pick something which I'll be eating half an hour later. And I shall have to see whether there is a suitable organic veg delivery service to the new place, but I expect there will be something.

The resolution is going to change a bit, however, since I need no convincing about the joys of eating this way.

2. Get my blood sugar levels down to under 7. This should be doable, I just need to take a bit more notice, and possibly do a bit more reading on the subject.

Third resolution this year was, Do more recs. I suppose I did go some way towards that, with the Snowflake Challenge and the February Fanfic, but on the whole I'm not sure there's much point reccing popslash stories: everyone has read the classics and people who've left the fandom don't really want to read the more recent stuff, even though much of it is excellent. I sorta have sympathy on that one, as I can't recall reading any ST:TNG stories for years, so I do understand how once you're done with a fandom, it's done. Anyway, I'm not repeating that one.

My fourth resolution was to do more podfics, and I sort of have, in that I've participated in a couple of pod_together challenges, but I didn't really manage to pick up any stories I loved and for which my Very English Voice would be a real asset, and I'm not sure if I'm going to do so this year, either. I'd like to, but I don't think it's going to be a resolution.

So number three is:

3. Get paid for writing something.

'Cause that, I'm going to have to work for.
