Random recs
Aug. 11th, 2006 04:44 pmIn a completely random fashion I have managed to find my way to a few rather good non-popslash stories lately, which I feel inclined to share.
I suspect that people who're interested in Heyer slash have already found their way to The Wages of Vice, an immaculately characterised story of the Duke of Avon and his friend Hugh Davenant, fitting carefully behind and around the canon of These Old Shades and Devil's Cub. It's Hugh's story, really, his self-discovery, and it's very moving. Also, hot.
From Georgette Heyer to Lois Bujold as source material: there's a charming story of The Proposal, which characterises Gregor (and little Miles and little Ivan) quite beautifully, and also adds a lot of believable substance to Laisa. Het, and delightful.
Wandering through the fertile fields of
metafandom I found a link to Wesley's Liberal Guilt, which was written back in 2002. Well, I've never taken that much notice of Buffy or Angel fanfic. This is Wesley yearning for Gunn, but getting himself tied into paralysing knots trying to figure out how not to be in any way racist. Clever, sweet, and thought-provoking.
Still in the Whedonverse is Begin the Beguine, a Firefly prequel story with an authentic Firefly feel to it. Zoe and Wash are definitely my OTP from that show, and I really like Wash's 'voice' in this story. It is, quite properly, an actual adventure as well as a romance.
And I can't resist a mention of Can't Stop the Turtle, a Firefly/Discworld crossover which amazingly manages to capture a real flavour of both - and has Vimes. (I love Vimes.) The macguffin isn't quite as, hmm, horrible as the characters appear to think, but the descriptions along the way are splendid fun.
Go forth and read.
I, meanwhile, am to visit a hospice, for my brother-in-law's girlfriend has reached the end of what chemotherapy has to offer.
