It's nice wearing big baggy trousers, I feel slimmer. Had to put a belt through so they didn't fall down, which is not abut me losing weight, which I haven't, but about the unexpectedly large capacity of cheap trousers from Sainsburys.
Went to visit my Dad, which of course necessitated chocolate on the way home.
What's the last thing you wrote?
Straight, though it feels like cheating to say so as about 96% of it was written a good two years ago. The most recently-created story was Trials, latest installment in the Chronicles of Lancyn and Ser Chrisfer.
Was it any good?
Straight is okay, Trials I am more pleased with. Well, I should hope I've improved!
What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?
Hmm. Either "George's Tangle", my first attempt at a Regency romance, and a complete Heyer rip-off, or the Cassie story whose title I have forgotten, which was my first attempt to write a Mills & Boon. I can't remember which came first, but both are around somewhere.
I still regret disposing of the epic multi-generational fantasy story I wrote when I was about twelve, though.
Write poetry?
Hmm. Verse, rather than poetry. I like the constraints of rhythm and rhyme, but they're always done with tongue firmly in cheek.
Angsty poetry?
Well, some inevitable stuff when I broke up with my first boyfriend (I was sixteen), and a quite good free verse thing after I saw "The Deer Hunter" (my first X film, back when films for 18+ were called X films).
Most fun character you ever wrote?
Urg. Probably Data. I'm not sure it's legit to claim him, though, since he's not my invention.
Most annoying character you ever wrote?
I really don't know.
Best plot you ever wrote?
Possibly The Little Dustbuster that Could, or else A Matter of Timing. Both on a theme of time travel, which is obviously about as plottish as my stories get.
Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?
I don't think I do plot twists generally. Probably the best was in Revenge of the Gnomes, which is The Archers fanfic.
How often do you get writer's block?
I get peaks of prolific activity, then troughs of laziness. Not exactly 'block', just times when the fantasies in my head are too much fun to lay aside, but are not stories that can be written down.
How do you fix it?
Usually, get a deadline!
Do you type or write by hand?
Type, these days.
Do you save everything you write?
Yes
Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?
Occasionally.
What's your favorite thing that you've written?
Probably Backstage, but really, the answer varies all the time.
What's everyone else's favorite thing that you've written?
Merchandising, I should think.
Do you ever show people your work?
Ahaha. Yes.
Who's your favorite constructive critic?
nopseud, I should think.
Did you ever write a novel?
Well, a couple of Mills & Boon length stories and a Regency which is short-novel length.
Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?
Not horror.
Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?
Yep.
What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
Horror, I should think. Not my thing. Thrillers, too, require too much plotting.
How many writing projects are you working on right now?
Aha. Um. In theory, two, in practise, not so much with the working.
Do you want to write for a living?
No.
Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?
Yes, as an exercise. I don't think I sent it off, though. It was nauseating stuff!
Have you ever won an award for your writing?
Sundry awards on alt.startrek.creative, long while back.
Ever written something in script or play format?
My first-ever opus was a play! My primary school class performed it. Though I still maintain the director (our teacher) misinterpreted the story.
What is your favorite word?
snuggle
Do you ever write based on yourself?
Not directly.
Which of your characters most resembles you?
Dunno.
Where do you get ideas for your characters?
Well, I write fanfic these days, so they are sorta there.
Do you ever write based on your dreams?
No. Wait, once. A lava lamp pictorial story!
Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?
Happy endings. Me sap.
Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?
This story was based on a photo of AJ looking all oiled andreceptive passive.
Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?
Yes, oh yes. Can't help myself. I don't have much of a problem with either, but a typo or a spelling I'm not sure of acts like a pebble in the flow, I have to deal with it.
Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?
Certainly not!
Does music help you write?
In a way - a song, or a line of lyrics, will often spark off an idea for a story. But I don't listen to music as I write, I find it distracting.
Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?
Most of them are used to it by now.
Quote something you've written.
"What," he ventured nervously, once the others had stopped guffawing, "what difference does it make how, er, how big it is? I mean, I thought... it's more important what you do with it, isn't it?"
"Yeah, sure, you've got to know how to use it, but you can't tell me a girl isn't delighted if you've got something substantial."
"But couldn't she just use her own wand?"
There was a tiny pause, then the dormitory exploded with laughter. At some point, one of the wheezed words somebody managed to squeeze out between huffs of mirth illuminated Neville's misunderstanding. Ah. That sort of 'wand'. Oh.
So girls liked big... things.
Cautiously - though with the others all laughing their heads off none of them was likely to notice - he picked his wand, his actual wand, off the bedside locker and slid below the bedclothes.
"Lumos!" he whispered.
In the faint gleam he peered beneath the waistband of his flannel pyjamas, and felt despondent. No wonder he never had a girlfriend.
