pensnest: Me in blue light (Bella)
The Beast and I went down to Bristol last night to see Bun's hall production of Guys and Dolls. Which is, as I have mentioned before, the Best Musical Ever. And the kids did a wonderful job with it. They had managed to create a very atmospheric set of tall, thin buildings in shades of blue. The rest of the setting was equally simple, but effectively done and very well managed. Orchestra a bit iffy - there was a fine trumpet in there somewhere, but I'd have to guess there aren't too many Music students living in that particular hall (or maybe all the Music students are involved in University-level productions). However, the singing was very good, so the overall effect was fine.

The production had an excellent Sky Masterson, tall and self-confident and with a splendid voice; his Sarah Brown's voice was pretty rather than powerful, but she acted well and did a very good drunken 'If I were a Bell'. Nathan Detroit looked the perfect spiv, caught the character perfectly and sang well, too (though that's not necessarily a requirement for the role - I mean, Bob Hoskins did it!). And for me, Miss Adelaide was the star - she was lovely, so much character and a super voice. There were good moments from the supporting cast too, I particularly liked Harry the Horse.

The chorus was well managed and well drilled, and the 'big production numbers' were pretty impressive considering the restrictions of time and a tiny stage. My Bun appeared as a Guy at several points, looking quite suave in her Dad's Italian double-breasted suit (!) and a black hat borrowed from our costume supplies. (She was a Doll, too, at other times.) I was very pleased to see how beautifully she reacted to the action, too, it's always important to have a lively chorus who are visibly taking an interest in the principals' doings, and she did a fine job.

The show got better and better as the evening went on, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm so glad I was able to get to Bun's first-ever show. Pride! (Why is there no Proud mood available? Hmph.) Hope it will be the first of many - I know she enjoyed the experience.

And today, rehearsal and concert. Tomorrow, show rehearsal. Gah.

And I forgot to mention the little snippet from yestereday's Independent, about the Bad Sex Award, this year granted to the Giles Coren, author of this edifying little snippet from Winkler:

she scratched his back deeply with the nails of both hands and he shot three more times, in thick stripes on her chest. Like Zorro

Like. Zorro.

Oh, lawd!
