pensnest: Lance in gay shopping mode (Lance Fabulous)
Day 2 - In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you didn't create.

Part one: Popslash

We're still in the Make The Yuletide Gay season (author reveals in a few days—get your feedback in fast!), so I'm going back to MTYGs past to re-rec a story written for me in 2008, Prove Them Wrong, by chalcopyrite. There's an Nsync reunion in progress, not without its difficulties, and Lance finds someone—also not without difficulties. Lance/Nick, yummy.

and you'll notice my smile (is like kool aid) by no pseud attached, in which Lance discovers the power of his smile to get him what he wants, even if he sometimes directs it at the wrong people. Perfect hair, he felt sure, had some mysterious synergistic effect with his smile, and would probably allow him to pick up astronauts, or at least fighter pilots, just as soon as he could find any. Chris, however, seems determined to spoil Lance's fun. Chris/Lance (eventually)

Buying a Clue by Lennie, in which Lance is the Arch-Villain General Crumpet, Justin is his deadly, treacherous and incredibly vain trophy-mistress Sweetpea the Terrible, Chris is a Leprechaun, Joey is a rather lazy superhero, and JC is the bard who recounts their tale. I haven't read this in far too long! Lance/Justin, very funny indeed.

Part 2: not popslash

I'm going to stop with the popslash or I'll be going for ever. Here are a handful from other fandoms that I've enjoyed.

Diary of a Brave Adventurer Survivor of the Zombie Apocalypse. This is the Top Gear Zombie Apocalypse Special. Seriously. Well, perhaps not that seriously. But think about it. Clarkson vs zombies… How. Much. Fun. would he have with that?

The "A Deeper Season" series by lightgetsin, which for my money is 'alternative canon' for the Miles Vorkosigan books. Absolutely wonderful series, splendidly long. I've linked to the first story of the series on AO3, although 'A Deeper Season' itself is a little further on. It's Miles/Gregor, and it makes perfect sense.

Candles and Pretense by winterlive, featuring Adam Lambert, Brad Bell, and Adam Lambert. Very smart on the characterisation, and scorchingly hot sex.

Any Note You Can Reach by reni_days is a delightful bit of bandom fluff in which Gerard Way decides to cover a Panic! at the Disco song, and Panic reciprocates, and… well, it's so much fun it even had me looking up YouTube video of the songs in question so I knew what they were talking about.

Planet Sherlock by pir8fancier, in which Sherlock sabotages all John's relationships, and they devise an… interesting rating system for sexual encounters. It involves severed fingers.
pensnest: JC with a flower (JC Chasez cuteness)
I must say, it's nice to find that there are *no* stories in this year's challenge for which I struggled desperately to find something nice to say. Obviously I fell in love with some of the stories and not others, but that's always going to happen.

Today I'm going to take a look at the Crossover section.

A Family Vacation (Brian/Chris)

The 'maternal' POV on this makes a very interesting change within popslash. Although it's more a 'glance through life' than an actual story, it's sweetly told.

A Walk In The Park (AJ/Lance)

I love the way AJ and Lance talk to one another. They're people who've been around one another for a long time, who've led the same life and understand one another, even before they know each other very well. Lots of tasty canon references, too.

Bon Appétit (Lance/Nick)

Nick goes to Lance for cooking lessons, and Lance can see that the cooking won't solve his problems. The last scene is very sweet, although it would have been nice to see a bit more of the relationship developing before we reached it.

White Christmas I already mentioned yesterday in a Trickyfish context.

Captain Christopher Kirkpatrick's Fortieth (and the Ensuing Adventure and Anguish Thereafter) (Chris/Nick)

A very stylish story set in an intriguing and richly detailed universe. Lots of great visuals and lovely language.

High Flying Adored (JC/Nick)

A long-term look at the relationship, from a sweet, gentle beginning through some very painful times before it reaches its happy ending. Intense and emotional, very well done.

day is done (JC/Nick/Chris)

Another threesome—I do approve of this tendency to incorporate the alternate pairing!—which is gentle and domestic, the affection between them very nicely shown.

Track 10 (JC/Nick)

I love stories about our boys actually creating music, and this one has a lot of fun stuff going on. Nick is pining over AJ, and doesn't notice that he's basically in a relationship with JC until Howie calls and tells him so. It's adorable.

Give it a spin (Chris/Kevin)

Kevin's a dance teacher and Chris needs lessons to prepare him for an upcoming wedding. Nicely snarky Chris, and a Kevin POV that shows poor Kevin being as professional as possible while biting back the internal monologue that's basically saying, Want! Want!

Heirlooms (Justin/Nick)

This one's really moving—I had wet eyes reading it—with Justin and Nick in a steady relationship. Nick doesn't have the same kinds of memories Justin has, and Justin wants to remedy that. It's *so* sweet.

Lost and Found (Brian/JC)

A long, detailed AU with a bit of a mystery to the story. JC has a farm and runs Chasez Mountain Tours, Nick is the local sheriff, and Brian is a crime victim. I never check the pairings before I read, and this one kept me tantalised as to who would end up with whom, which I enjoyed.

The one with the Spanish tutor (Chris/Howie/Nick)

Another very sweet story, and again we have a threesome here. I think my favourite moment in it is the scene in which Nick falls properly in love with Howie, but the relationships between all the Boys are nicely explored.
