In the light of LJ's current attempt to fuck shit up, if anyone reading this would like a DreamWidth code, I have plenty to give away.

I *like* DreamWidth. They have re-nameable tags and re-nameable icons. They have expandable cut tags! They consult the user base about possibilities instead of implementing bloody stupid ideas. All I need there is for my Friends to start posting on DW—and cross-posting is really easy, guys.

I kinda know what you mean about the iPhone, although I do also have a tendency to forget whether mine is in my handbag or next to me at the computer... Very useful in those moments of boredom while waiting at the doctor's, etc!

This annoys me so much. I wish I'd never gotten that permanent account here. I love DW too but I can't justify paying for two journals. (I know, I don't have to. But I don't like not being able to use my own moodtheme and things like that ahahaha) It seems a waste.

What with the "let's ignore privacy issues and connect you to FaceBook" *and* the "let's bugger up the / in your tags" going on at the same time, it sorta feels like LJ is saying, Fandom, you can leave now.

I haven't made any attempt to figure out personalising my DW journal... mostly because I didn't really do it here, either. Turlough made the original of this layout for me, and I've just adapted what she did ever since. But I have sympathy for anyone who's got personalised anything...

I think the people who *own* LJ (as opposed to the poor minions who run LJ) don't regard users as people with their own cultures and opinions but as resources with a market value. I suspect that explains a lot.

I'd quite like to be able to opt out of having those little Repost to Facebook and Twitter options right before I get to the Post Comment button. But so far the only option appears to be a Greasemonkey script on Firefox, which I don't use for this LJ.

It *appears* that at the moment the poster of a comment is in charge of whether it crossposts or not. Not the journal owner.

Hmmm... ok. I can see how that's not cool. the LJ owner, if they have opted out, should be the lead on whether those buttons appear or not. I have to admit to not understanding all this need people in general have for 14 different kinds of social media accounts.

Yeah—I don't even have a FaceBook, I'm just at the stage of being irritated by occasional emails telling me someone I know thinks I should Friend them on FB, gah. But for people who keep a FB account for family, say, and an LJ account for, well, porn... Crossover bad!

As I mentioned to A... I'm learning it's not quite as cut and dry as I initially thought. I'm not a fan of Facebook either, though I have one I never use. I'm actually starting to miss having to send paper mail to people to keep in touch. All of this stuff [from all these social medias] makes me feel quite violated and exposed.

Further to what Pen said, the way that the check boxes are placed in the comment box means that people who use TAB+ENTER to post their comments can fairly easily crosspost a comment completely by accident. It's a really poor piece of design, and if nothing else I hope they fix that.

I'm going to assume the TAB+ENTER thing is some form of computer wizardy I am not aware of and not code for something. ;-) It does seem to be poorly designed and executed. I'm also learning it's not as cut and dry as opt in or out.

If you're in a browser, then hitting the TAB key will move you between all the links on the page. You can then 'click' the highlighted link my hitting ENTER. If you're typing, it saves you reaching for the mouse, and it's very useful for people who get wrist strain from mice.

The funny thing is, there have recently been a couple of posts on DW about redesigning the 'post' page, inviting comments from users. One of the things that came up was where to position things like the 'post' button. But this, having the check boxes *first*, is untidy and inconvenient for someone like me, who scrolls down to the 'post comment' button, and downright hazardous for people who use Tab.

One of the biggest things for me about DW is that I'd have to rebuild my flist from scratch, and find people that have different usernames on the two sites. Other than that, I'm just about ready to move.

I've been contemplating setting all comments to DW, though I'm not sure I can be bothered to figure out how. But, grrr! I don't understand how LJ's management can so persistently cock things up. I have spent quite a lot of the day imagining all the minions who work for LJ, the ones who probably said, Interface with FaceBook? but that's a Bad Idea! sitting at their desks saying, Told you so.

Eh, I don't have the time or inclination to mess around with more than one journal site, so no DW, myspace, twitter or whatever. I don't have an iphone. I pay $100 a year for my cell, obviously I don't use it much, but it makes calls, texts has a camera and a ton of other stuff I have no idea how to use (nor do I care much to be bogged down with the knowledge thereof). So yeah, all my stuff is here on 2 permanant accounts, it suits my needs so no reason for me to look elsewhere. No facebook or twitter to cross post to for me. Although, it does make me think I should make my personal journal totally *Friends Only*. Maybe.

I have a lot of sympathy with your decision not to have a vast array of 'social networking' at your disposal. I don't have a Twitter or FB either, and wouldn't have one if you paid me. But I opened a DW journal a while ago, just in case LJ got spectacularly unfriendly for fandom (again), and I'm glad I did. The complaints today—not just about this insane crossposting idea but also the fact that the "/" has apparently broken in tagging—give the distinct impression that LJ is saying, Fandom? Go away.

I haven't noticed any "/" issues. At least not yet. Hopefully it's a limited and temporary situation. Maybe I'm just too lazy to spend more time juggling journals. LOL

Mostly I figure they all have their faults and they'll all make mistakes, but yeah, I can definitely see the aggrevation for those purposely trying to keep things separate.

I've been wondering whether you've been experiencing log-on issues, as I know you use multiple LJ accounts. I've seen complaints about being unable to comment and all sorts of issues with log-in pages.

It does stink that everyone is feeling like they have to scramble and post "don't link my journal/posts/etc". It should be a given with personal stuff. For fic stuff, fandom pics, etc, well, I don't see much of an issue with linking those posts as long as they're public posts anyway. Just sharing the fandom love, right? ;-)

I think it so much depends on who the poster is. I mean, I'm basically fine with it, but for some people it'd be really disastrous if some of their FaceBook contacts discovered they wrote slash, or are bisexual, or hate their boss, or... all sorts of things.

I just think the way this has been implemented is *insanely stupid*. Enable LJ users to crosspost to FB, fine. I would never bother, but some people may like the facility. Enable FaceBook users to comment to LJ posts... fine, with certain caveats, eg, it should be possible for the LJ owners to disallow FB comments in the same way that we can disallow anonymous comments. But the way it has been done means that the owner of the LJ has no control over who gets to comment on/be made aware of her posts, even her locked ones. It's outrageous.

One of the things that has a lot of people up in arms on the news post comments is that someone can crosspost a comment to FB/Twitter. And, if they reference the post they're commenting on, that content is therefore referred to on FB/Twitter.

That could be problematic.

Found this on a friend's LJ. It was posted on a comment by another user, so the credit belongs to that person:

To get rid of the twitter/facebook repost links in your journal entry comments do the following:


1. Go to your "Journal" menu, and select "Journal Style"
2. To the right, you'll see what theme you're using, with a link stating "Customize Your Theme". Click that link.
3. Scroll down a little ways, and you'll see that on the left side of your screen, you have multiple options to modify your theme. Click on the "Custom CSS" link, and it should load the options for doing Custom CSS.
4. From here, all you have to do is go to the "Custom Stylesheet", and put in that line.

Once that's in there, you want to save the changes, and you should be done. Leave everything else as it is (unless you want to remove more things!).


It seems it's only working on certain browsers.

What I hate about this whole thing, is that the commenter has the "power" to screw up the poster's entry. One can make an unwilling mistake, but still...I can't believe LJ is doing these things all over again.

From the look of things in the epic comments of doom, I don't think LJ is going to make it all better for us. Indeed, some of the commenters have pointed out that the wording of the original post hints that those who wrote it—ie the US-based LJ staffers—didn't think much of the idea themselves. But the attitude of the Russian owner... well, that plus the probability of 'monetarizing the LJ asset' leads me to believe LiveJournal's culture is going to be forcibly changed, and not for the better.
