Mickey!!
Mickey!!
Ooh, voice like leopard inside cello, hello Cumberbatch!
Mickey! Mic—oh, poop.

Hmm, I see Kirk is playing the fool as usual.

These spiky futuristic skyscrapers are getting old. Also, why does nobody ever extrapolate into a future where there is a lot more sea?

Bones, you have a fur hat on your worktop. Shoulda gone to Specsavers.

Wait - is that the Millennium Falcon? No? Okay, then. Did it just—no. Totally not.

I so love fight scenes that take place almost entirely amidst confusing shadows. Perhaps I'm just getting old.

Ah, moderately intelligent use of a transporter. By a bad guy, of course.

Yay, Scotty! What happened to little rubble-headed guy?

I dunno, seeing skyscrapers destroyed by terrorists just seems to have lost its charm lately. Can't think why.

Scotty's accent degenerating at fantastic pace. Question: if casting a "Scottish" character, why not, I don't know, cast a Scot?

Okay, predict-the-ending starts now! And… Tribble, check. Blood, check. Tedious and improbable fight aboard fast-moving vehicles—okay, did not predict that but it is STUPID. They have a wide selection of supercorpsicles to… oh, never mind, it's an Action Packed Sequence, gotta have those. At last, all well, doing away with need to reprise third movie, check.

It was okay—not as much fun as the first reboot movie, but quite clever to do some of it as a mirror image of the original. (Might be more than I remember, I'm not that well versed in The Wrath of Khan.) But why did nobody put a slug in Chekov's ear? Really, some things cannot be repeated too often. Also, Benedict Cumberbatch as *Khan*??? What inexplicable casting. Benedict Cumberbatch should be an evil Romulan. Benedict Cumberbatch could be a *wonderful* evil Romulan. This just doesn't work.

I think Pegg said he uses his father's (or was it grandfather's?) Edinburgh dialect. Though I've never been, so I don't know how close it is!

The story is actually nothing like The Wrath of Khan - the first reboot film was actually very similar to it though - they just used one scenario (the death scene with the glass barrier) in a similar way (though reversed).

sarnath: Reboot Kirk and Spock (Kirk and Spock side by side)
From: [personal profile] sarnath
I watched a whole bunch of interviews so I don't remember which one it was from, of course, heh. He talked about how he tried to sneak in dialectal words and expressions that his grandfather (or father) who was Scottish used, but wasn't usually allowed because people couldn't understand him!

I'm not that old of a fan; I watched TOS and The Wrath of Khan in the late eighties when I was around twelve or so, but I rewatched it recently because I'd forgotten so much! I still love it very much, but to be honest a lot of it isn't very good (though some parts really are), and there is so much sexism and racism in forms that we're just not used to seeing any more. But they did try, and I keep that in mind while watching.

The Wrath of Khan actually plays out nearly exactly like the first reboot film. Kirk and Khan have rather the same roles as Spock and Nero do. The endings aren't even that dissimilar! In Into Darkness the ending is a bit similar to TWoK in that they trick Khan, but they don't use the same trick, and the result is pretty different.

And the 'friends forever' scene doesn't resonate nearly so well without years of TV series behind it.

I both agree and disagree; it's not the same feeling, but for me it was just as strong a feeling (though that's probably just because certain things really worked for me personally). I think it was illustrated by the role reversal, in a way, since the situation is both alike and unlike the original. The characters are at a different and much more volatile place in their lives, and there's more passion and discovery in the new version whereas in the original it was about a deep connection already acknowledged, and acceptance.

Ah, bummer. I was hoping to hear it was as good/fun as the first one. Not that I'll see it until it's available on DVD, but, yeah.

why does nobody ever extrapolate into a future where there is a lot more sea? Because Waterworld sucked so badly that no one wants to go there again. :)

I don't know, I was sufficiently entertained enough by Quinto and Cumberbatch (mmmmm...) to let all the plot holes and lazy writing slide. The group of friends (geeks, all) I went with all also loved it, but none of us were really Trekkies to begin with. Everyone concurred that Spock was, again, the best thing about the movie.
