pensnestMy sister and nephew are here and we went to the open day at UEA for Nephew to look around. His first uni visit, and probably not the place he wants to be (although there is an American Football option here), but nice to have a chance to look around somewhere without the pressure of Really Really Wanting to get on the particular course.
We went to a talk about the English Literature with Creative Writing course. I Really Really Wish I could do this.

The Friday Five for Stardate 11609.09: Star Trek 50th Anniversary
1. Where were you on September 8, 1966? Did you watch the first episode of Star Trek that evening? If you are too young -- did your parents watch it?
No idea. But I assume that's the date it came out in the USA, so probably not.
2. Who is your favorite Star Trek captain, and why?
Picard. The voice, the acting, the occasional grandiose gestures, and oh yes, the voice. And gravitas.
3. Who is your favorite Star Trek character of all time, and why?
Data. He's just My Kind of Guy—not exactly good looking but with a really expressive face and an innocence that I find really appealing. I discovered years after I fell in love with Data that he's a character whom people with Aspergers can identify with, and people with Aspergers (or close) seem also to be My Type. And Brent Spiner did such a fabulous job.
4. Which Star Trek series is your favorite, and why?
Well, TNG. Despite its many flaws. Despite most of season one and almost all of season seven. Despite the jumpsuits. Despite the Klingons. Despite the lack of interesting storylines for Troi until around season six, and despite the wimping-down of the whole idea of Star Trek between TOS and this show. It's the one I fell in love with. Deep Space Nine is in second place, for me, because although it was probably better conceived and better done, on the whole, I never had a One True Character in that cast.
5. Which Star Trek movie is your favorite, and why?
Galaxy Quest.
Okay, then, the one with the Whales. Which almost feels like a TNG piece, because all the cast members had something fun to do in it. The actual TNG films were very poor.
