Has anybody seen The Collection? It is a series of eight episodes set in Paris a couple of years after WWII, in an up-and-coming fashion house.

Paul Sabine, head of the fashion house, wants, very much wants, to be a success, but his problem is that his brother is the creative genius. Brother Claude is really terrible with clients and has wanted to be kept separate from that side of the business, but is beginning to change his mind. Also, he's gay. Their mother is somewhat horrifying.

There's Billy, an American ingenu photographer with a real eye for a picture; there's Nina, picked from the sewing room to become a house model after Billy takes photos of her; there's Charlotte, whose role in the house probably has a name (I can't remember it), for she organises the client fittings and persuades them into the right dresses; there's Rossi, an American reporter who knows he is on to something. Lots more characters besides.

And when I say 'characters', I mean that each and every one of them has their own character, their own motivations, their own goals. The plot happens not Because Plot, but because the characters do things to further their own agendas. And very occasionally there's a bit of coincidence or luck thrown in, but a lot of it is carefully followed through because the characters are who they are. I love this.

I really, really enjoyed this show. We've just watched the final episode this afternoon (alas!), and I want more. I think I know what some of them did next, but I'd be so delighted if other people were writing it! I searched AO3 and found ONE story, one, and though elegantly written it is basically a PWP, and I want more. And I don't think there is going to be a follow-on series.

Have you seen the show? Would you like to squee with me? Tell me your favourite character(s), scenes, plot developments, your favourite dress, etc.

Ooh, thank you, I'll have to check this out. I just rewatched The House of Elliot, a UK-based show that sounds similar. Set post-WWI, two sisters are left destitute after their father dies. The one gets a job as an assistant to a photographer and they start a fashion house later.

As they got bigger they hired a 'vendeur' (sp?) which dealt with appointments and fittings of these upper class clients.
