pensnest: Lance close up (Lance hey)

Well, darn. We were due to have the new carpet fitted in bedroom 2 today. Fitter arrived promptly at 0830 and put down the underlay, but when he went to get the roll of carpet from his van, he eyed it suspiciously, measured it to be sure, and found that it was two metres short of what it needs to be. So he has gone back to the carpet place to find out wtf happened, and we are unable to empty the ensuite, the dressing room and bedroom 3 of the variously distributed bits of bed. Grump.

A larger piece is being obtained and *should* be fitted for us on Friday morning. I hope.

My taste in music is rather old-fashioned. I have quite a collection of American standards, quite a bit of jazz classics (mostly sung by women), quite a few oldies. So it is borne in upon me that there are a *lot* of songs sung by women about how He Needs Me, or It's Just His Way, or Sure He's Useless but I Love Him, or, I'd Rather Be Beaten Up By Him Than Kissed By Anyone Else, etc etc etc. So many songs where the woman's virtue lies in loving a godforsaken bastard no matter what. Appalling.

Now, there are songs about how My Woman Treats Me Bad (see the Backstreet Boys' oeuvre for many examples). There are probably songs about how My Woman Misbehaves But She's Mine, but there's not that same insistence that he has to love her because.... he just has to. Are there songs sung by men about how his woman treats him badly but he needs to follow where she leads, how she loves him in her own way, how she needs him? You know, delusional songs?

There's a woman on Twitter who looks like a female version of Lance.

The pic of Lance in his We're All Human T-shirt makes this particularly clear.

The Offspring's "Self_Esteem" comes to mind:

When she's saying, oh, that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she's saying, oh, that I'm like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can spend
Well, I guess I should stick up for myself
But I really think it's better this way
The more you suffer
The more it shows you really care
Right? Yeah, yeah, yeah

Grump indeed. That's a very annoying mistake for them to make.

I hope your new carpet has now been properly installed!

There certainly SHOULD be songs like that but sadly I can't recall any right now.

Her eyes look so much like Lance's it's almost scary!

I suspect the origin of many of these songs is cultural. A time and a place where women were not allowed to earn money themselves (or at least not in a job that payed a living wage) and were thus totally dependent on their husbands.

Thus, can't afford to leave. Thus self-delusion and a front of claiming that you love him in order to avoid being kicked out into the street to starve.

Especially in a time when a woman who left her husband would find it hard to remarry - especially if she had children.

Gah, how frustrating about the carpet!

All I can think of is La Belle Dame sans Merci. Which I guess is not a song per se, though surely there must be musical settings of it floating around.

The first song I thought of was Layla by Eric Clapton, but it was written for his actual wife and considering that in real life, he would go on to abuse and cheat on her...uh, maybe not the best example?

Ha!!

It was my dad's favorite song. He used to get drunk and play it on these eight hour loops(!!!) so, YES, I definitely know the lyrics! I think they apply, but I've managed to talk myself out of this one. Because context.
