Challenge #4

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you.

I'm not keen on this kind of challenge. The most obvious thing to ask for is feedback on my stories here on AO3 or chronologically on my website, but most of the people interested have already given me feedback, and the world is too full of fanfic-of-interest for many fans to have time to read a story about people they just aren't fans *of*. I'd quite like the world—or at least, the Archive—to contain more Lance Bass/Adam Lambert stories that I did not write. I feel it should. This is a pairing of JOY, people! But the time for that, too, has passed. Besides, with the abundance of challenges and gift fic exchanges and suchlike, fans are *busy*. With stuff they actually want to read and write. So it always seems a bit pathetic. I don't particularly like being pathetic.

Overall, I don't think there is very much I could ask for that I could reasonably expect to get. I don't know whether saying that is a sign that I'm not doing very well, or that I'm being realistic. I think, the latter, but I'm not absolutely sure. But I am fortunate enough to have so much in my life that so many people don't have, for one reason or another, that asking for trivialities makes me uncomfortable.

I just thought of something else—a revival of metafandom.

It's okay not to ask for things, or to skip a challenge.

However, there's a category of things that people routinely DO get: information. Recommendations, resources, anything that can be described or linked online -- someone will probably fill it. I'm filling all of those that are relevant to my skills and resources, which is (quick count) 16 people so far. Obviously I don't have fanfic for canons I don't read, but I think I've done well.

Another fair chance: podfic of your work, because there are multiple podfic makers in Snowflake who want to find things to record. I've gotten a couple this way over the last few Snowflakes. If you want this, you can also boost your chances by posting a Transformative Works Policy, because that's another thing they search for.

It was easy to ask for quite specific things in an active fandom - there was a lovely little LJ comm where people could request ficlets and reasonably expect to get them. But that's the energy of an active fandom.

There are lots of people who can reasonably ask for things that they can reasonably expect to get, but I'm just answering the challenge for myself, and the things I want are not things I can reasonably expect. That's all. I'm not saying other people are not entitled to ask for things.

I never really hung out at metafandom, but I know it gave you and others so much pleasure that I hope one day it is revived.

There were times when it was quite terrifying to read, and I almost never contributed, as I was so in awe of the incredibly smart people who took part in meta and debates. But it taught me *so* much!

A revival of metafandom would be a joy forever! It's so sad to think that thoughful discussions in an easy-to-follow format should have disappeard from fandom forever.

Someone else mentioned this, missing the proper fandom interactions, the meta. And I can so relate, perhaps partly out of nostalgia but still; I do miss having fandom(s) like we used to.
