he's gotta be fresh from the fight
Jun. 26th, 2023 05:27 pmHonestly, 30 degrees! *mutters* It is in the low twenties today, and all the better for it.

I don't know if I'll manage all the June Something questions, but here are a couple more.
Day 6: Who was the first hero you wanted to be saved by?
Hannibal Hayes and Kid Curry, Alias Smith and Jones (Pete Duel and Ben Murphy) My pre-fannish little soul was very happy with these two. Plus they did an episode where the guys rescue two teenage girls, which I saw while I was at boarding school, so, yeah. The girls had to snuggle with the guys on a chilly camp-out, too, probably spawning untold numbers of teenage fantasies.
And from what would you need rescuing?
I do not know. Boredom, or an unpleasant stepmother, possibly.
On reflection, though, it *might* have been Biggles. Or Ginger. Though I think when I went on adventures with them, I *was* Ginger, and I probably rescued Biggles and Algy.
Day 7: Who was the first villain you admired, even if only a little? Why?
I really liked Holtz, from Angel. He was very memorable, mostly because he was righteous. He knew Angelus was an evil beast who needed to be punished for his wickedness, and he single-mindedly devoted himself to doing just that. And he was not wrong. He wasn't having any truck with the fluffy nonsense about a soul, and given that Angel's soul seems to have been a temporary resident at best, who shall blame him? A villain is so much more interesting if he's right.
To be fair, most actually villainous people probably think they are right, even if their goal is just something like "I wanna be rich and if anyone gets in my way, screw them". But this villain wasn't in it for himself, he was in it for righteousness.

Date: 2023-06-26 06:04 pm (UTC)Actually, I think you're onto something there. It's like The Operative on Firefly, if you've seen this - as Inara said, he's dangerous because he's a believer. He isn't about GOOD, he's about his idea of righteousness. Religious extremists do terrible things because they think it's what must be done.
Wolfram and Hart people probably don't think they're doing anything right. Except for Angel and co, when they join to try changing things - which backfires, and I suppose it's possible it backfired for others, however IIRC nothing ever suggests that Lilah or Lindsay or anyone thought they were going in for the greater good. I'm actually not sure what their motivations were, but I think they were different from Holtz. (I'm talking initially, not as the story progressed and we saw attempts at redemption - from both, I believe. My memory's a little fuzzy on Lilah, but I know Lindsay did a heel-turn.) In any case, they clearly knew they were working for actual evil, but I'm not sure whether or not they always knew that or whatnot.
I have mixed feelings about Angel, but I WILL say it was great for exploring those kinds of ideas. When you look past some of the WTF, you see it is actually an incredibly deep show that has you questioning so much. (Also, "if nothing we do matters, then what matters is what we do" is one of my mantras when the world starts getting to me.)
ETA: Sorry, this got long-winded.

Date: 2023-06-26 09:53 pm (UTC)I think the Wolfram and Hart people weren't at all worried about being righteous, they just wanted what they could get. Deals with the devil traditionally come with wealth and plenty of sex, etc. Possibly at some point they recognised that they were in so deep they were never getting out....
I have that quote embroidered on a T-shirt. I think it's perfect!

Date: 2023-06-27 07:16 pm (UTC)I remember enjoying Alias Smith and Jones A LOT back in the day. Pete Duel was dreamy :-)
Ginger was totally my favourite character in the Biggles books. Though I never wanted to be rescued. I wanted to do the rescuing myself!
