Hammersmith Palais, 13th July
Jul. 14th, 2006 01:13 amIt has been a busy day. Also, quite an expensive one in a number of ways. But overall, rather a good day.
Bun and I went to get our hair cut and coloured today. Or... Alas that the guy who booked us in had interpreted my request for a 'cut and colour' as a 'cut and blowdry'. So we were pruned but not painted, and will have to go back next week.
Modicum of shopping, followed by lunch, followed by Bun falling asleep on my bed, followed by us getting respectable and heading down to London. Got to Hammersmith a little before six, and saw snaking up to the Broadway a queue of people already wearing their Justin Timberlake SexyBack Clubtour bracelets... so we purchased sarnies, and joined said queue. Which didn't get let in to the pesky venue until nearly twenty to eight, sigh. You'd have thought they'd *want* us inside buying overpriced drinks...
My first pop concert since, I think, 1980(!), and my first ever club show. Yes, there are new experiences to be had even at my advanced age. Feet and back were well tired by 9.40, which is when the show actually started, and much to my annoyance our careful arriving early and selection of place to be was foiled by a man in a blue sweatshirt/white t-shirt, who stood at the top of the stairs, thus blocking my view of the centre of the stage... let's just say that, had I been equipped with half a brick, I might not have been inclined to mercy.
View of the audience from above (we went up to the balcony) showed an abundance of tiny pale blue squares... Scour the internet, people, the footage will be there somewhere. Bun did the camera work for us, I dunno what she managed to capture, but we may be able to share it with the folks chez
turps33 tomorrow, yay sparkly weekend!
Anyway. The show.
The 'Hall of the Mountain King' riff gave way to Cry me a River and much squealing. Justin was in suit trousers, white shirt and brown waistcoat, and hatted to begin with. (Must have been very warm indeed.) He went to the keyboard for Senorita, and after that came the first of the new songs, which might possibly have been called My Girl (who can say?), and had a great beat. There was, however, *far* too much bass at the beginning of the show, it didn't seem so offensive later on so perhaps someone got a clue.
Anyway. Justin wielded guitar for Like I Love You and stayed with it for the next new song, which seemed to be Until the end of time, pleasant enough but nothing special, I thought.
Then, my favourite of the evening, a really nice riff and it got me moving, She Knows or possibly, I think that she knows. Bit of beatboxing showed up there, hmm. The end was a bit off, though, went from the cool riff to something ordinary.
There was something from 'Justified' after that, which I fear I cannot identify as that is not on my list of much-loved and listened-to CDs. Bit of sycophantic chat from JT about how the UK is a home from home, and he was back at the keyboard for What Goes Around, which has a nice flowy chorus. Then another 'Justified' song (I could tell because the audience sang, see above), which was okay - JT produced a good deal of power on the high notes. Indeed his upper register was in fine form and much use...
The final flourish of Rock Your Body was a hell of a lot more fun live than on the CD, where it feels a bit staid. The large gentlemen from the backing quartet jointed JT at the front of the stage for a little synchronised dancing, which was fun. Then the inevitable disappearance-from-stage. For the encore, the backing singers swung into Sweet Dreams are made of this; then Justin came back onstage sans waistcoat and with his shirt open to reveal what we British call a vest underneath. Music turned into SexyBack, which was also a hell of a lot of fun to hear live, and again made me want to dance. Audience all internet-savvy, joined in at appropriate moments. Would the sturdy gent who joined JT for this number be Timbaland? I have no clue. Then the intro/outro of the band (*spectacular* drummer!) and that's all folks.
Why did Bun and I go to see Justin Timberlake? We're not that enamoured of his music (though maybe the new CD will be more to my taste than 'Justified')... but, hmm. I spose, because we could, and because we hadn't discovered the wonderful world of popslash when last he toured here. It was also very nice to have a chance to see him at a human distance rather than through binoculars - yes, despite the presence of the brick-worthy man in white t-shirt, I did actually get to see Justin. It was good - fun, and welcome experience for when (fingers *tightly* crossed) JC comes over... If this had been a JC show I would have been so much more wound up!
I probably won't have replies to any comments, as I'm off to the northern wastes tomorrow to see
