pensnest: Fashion shot of woman in fabulous hat (Hat hauteur)
[personal profile] pensnest
My Beast has few wants, and most of them are "bigger, faster computer", which he supplies for himself. It is consequently quite difficult to buy him Christmas presents, and I ended up in HMV selecting a bunch of fairly random DVDs (for those rare evenings when he is not raiding, grrr).

One of the purchases was the complete Jeeves and Wooster series with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (who must have been, what, twelve, at the time?). We watched one yesterday as we had lunch. It was *adorable*. I cannot imagine more perfect casting, and Bertie's transformation from drunk-and-hungover to functional was *so* brilliant, I cannot tell you how much I squeed. I love them already.

For no particularly good reason,

Genderswap Enjoy reading it if done well, though the "Oh, I'm a girl now, I must shave my legs and fret about my fingernails" thing irritates me no end. A *good* genderswap, where, say, Joey becomes a strapping wench, yes please! (I read a suggestion somewhere not so long ago that Ronon Dex would make a magnificent woman, and cor, omgyes.)

Bodyswap I like bodyswap fics. My own entry into this genre involved four people swapping around and not realising that there hadn't been a direct swap, so it was a bit of a challenge to write, POV-wise. But I've read a lot of really good ones, particularly in popslash. There are so many possibilities, it's a really interesting trope.

Drunk!fic Not particularly in favour, not particularly against. I don't much care for drunken idiocy, so it'd have to be done with great care.

Huddling together for warmth Eh, okay.

Undercover in a gay bar Heh. I did a spoof mini-fic on this once, otherwise I'm not much interested.

Pretending to be married Well, if we say, 'pretending to be boyfriends', I quite enjoy this stuff. A relic of my Mills&Boon teenage years, I suppose.

Secretly a virgin I quite like this, though it's not a Thing, for me. Everybody's a virgin some of the time, after all. Have written it.

Amnesia Not really my thing, though I've read one or two good stories that use it.

Cross-dressing Generally enjoy this. My own occasional efforts in this direction all seem to have been Rocky Horror related, but there are some very good stories around.

Forced to share a bed Forced? How painful can it be? Unless it's done with adroitness it just seems so *very* Bad Romance-y. It goes back to the early M&B thing of how it is Really Bad and Wrong to Share A Bed with A Man (But Ooh, It Makes Me Go All Shivery), and frankly I think we're over that now.

Aliens made them do it Again, I don't object, but it's not something I lunge for in excitement.

Wingfic Whatever. If it's good, it's good, but I don't quest for every possible example.

Mpreg Not a Thing of mine, although MPREG is probably my favourite popslash story ever. I've produced a couple of unserious ones. I've very little experience with the kind of mpreg that involves, say, punishing teh mens, or gushing over the whole 'having a baby' thing. Done it myself, thanks.

Mistakenly assumed to be gay Eh.

Let's play truth or dare Well. There are a few popslash fics featuring this kind of game, and if done well I'm happy to read it, but as a general rule the whole idea is a bit schoolgirlish for me. So if the protagonists actually *are* in high school...

Mary Sue fic Don't care to read it, though I admit my first fanfic was a Mary Sue (she was a *good* one, though, honest!) and there are definitely elements here and there in my stories. I think that's inevitable. But honest-to-goodness Mary Sues, no thanks.

Aphrodisiacs Not something I'd be looking for.

Curtain fic Well.... I do like a degree of domesticity. Established relationships can be a lot of fun, and after the first thousand or so "first time" stories, it's nice to have a couple who know one another well and are comfortable together. I don't want to read about my OTP setting up house and choosing wallpaper, though. And it's just possible that I have a detailed domestic fantasy in my head, but it's going to stay there because - hah! - it isn't a *story*.

Hurt/Comfort I don't seem to be able to write this, but I usually enjoy reading it. Sometimes it's just what you need. Although it seems unusual for the comfort part to be other than a bit of a let-down.

Apocalypse fic Not really my thing, though I have (recently) written it. Not something I look for. On reflection, I'd probably avoid it without a strong competing motive (eg a favourite pairing/a favourite author).

Someone has a baby If it's following canon, fine. I have no objection to children, but they are all too frequently written badly. I don't usually want to read a story about the imaginary offspring of my characters, although a story about my characters coping with parenthood may be interesting.

Baby!fic I am rarely interested in what my characters would have been like as toddlers. I spose it *can* be done well.

Telepathic soulbonding Ew.

Werewolves mate for life Um. Mating for life works for me, werewolves not so much.

On reflection, I don't *think* there are any common fanfic tropes that I grabbity-grab. I think my main kink is for things to be written well.
