Jul. 21st, 2006 12:07 pmI managed to choose two of the hottest days of the year to be in London instead of draping myself languidly about at home.
Tuesday - after the hair colouring, I am no longer grey! - I went to meet my Best Friend, who took me out for dinner and to see Sunday in the Park with George, a belated birthday present. It's a very cleverly presented show, quite literal 'painting with light', as the lighting is amazing. Some of the cast are lighting effects... Not much in the way of melodies - I know it's Sondheim, but he can and does write tunes, just not so much in this show, where there's an emphasis on the 'set feelings to jumpy, awkward music' side of Sondheim. Very interesting insights into what it means to be an artist, well, a creator. What an artist takes, what an artist *gives*. And of course nobody could help but pity the poor cast, set in their nineteenth century costumes, singing It's Hot Up Here. Truer words...
It's good to get together with Liz sometimes. She is such a contrast to me now, in high-powered employment (hee!) and very busy, so we don't get together as often as we could, but it always works. Also, heh, I gave her the address of my website, so she is now enabled to read the Treksmut (which wasn't up at fanfiction.net) and, ho ho, the popslash. I wonder what she will make of it.
Wednesday, Bun, Beast and I went to visit my brother-in-law's girlfriend, who has all kinds of cancer and whose life expectancy is now to be measured in weeks rather than months. She's amazingly cheerful, and has enough medically-prescribed heroin in the house to make a burglar very happy. I am reminded of the lesson I learnt from my mother-in-law's fragile life: it really is true that if you have your health, you have the biggest blessing of all.
Yesterday was singing evening again. We wrestled pathetically with an Italian chorus - why, when there are so very many little black notes, must two distinctly different syllables *share*? - then got along very nicely with something from Free as Air. But I still have Just an Ordinary Sunday stuck in my head at present. This is actually good, as I had SexyBack on permanent loop for several days and it was driving me round the bend.
