I wrote out a whole screed on the subject of whether writers should support other writers or not, and how it feels when that doesn't happen, and all sorts, with analogies to my amateur theatre activities etc. And then I thought, nah, can't be arsed. All communities are the same, with some people who make it work and other people who cherrypick, some who add squeak and some who add grease.

My Boy got his first uni offer in today, from his first choice - yay! He only has to get, ahem, AAB in his A-Levels. Well, it's doable...

OMG, Trickyfish Day is *VERY SOON*. Pen meeps, having done *nothing*

I have joined a LIMS challenge, and it is amazing how different the general icon style within popslash is from that pertaining in the SGA community, where there seems to be much more 'fashionable' stuff, including the IMO rather tiresome scratchy textures, so that instead of achieving a lovely clear, lucid image, the aim is apparently to grunge it up and make the subject indecipherable. Well. I've survived two rounds so far.

I'm, kind of interested in the rant, but - you are being very philosophical. Some who add squeek and some who add grease is a very good way of putting things.

And congrats on the current banner haul :D

See, I'd put that down to how much people really want to look at SGA actors versus how much they want to look at the popboys. ;-)

Hey hey, don't go mocking the SGA folks! They're plenty hot. ;-)

Was your would be rant promted by something recent in [livejournal.com profile] metafandom? It got me thinking as well. On one hand I'm against the thought of fandom obligations -- you do what you like, what brings you the most enjoyment -- but not giving anything back, well, I can't seem to be able to end this sentence neatly. I can see why you decided against posting, it's a difficult subject.

Mmm, yes. [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid's post is locked but I got the gist of what she said from you and the metafandom post. I was most baffled that [livejournal.com profile] alchemia said she couldn't find more than a handful of stories in HP that she enjoyed. I mean, look at the size of the fandom, and the variety. But to each their own, I guess.

that kinda reminds me of people in our theatre group, who don't join the chorus of a show if they don't get a principal role. It's not an exact analogy, but from the point of view of someone in the chorus, the feeling of not being treated as an equal might very well be similar.

Thanks, I was curious about you theatre group analogy and yes, it's a similar situation. Not the same, but emotionally similar. I shy from voicing my opinions on the subject too loudly, since I have a different perspective (not a writer) but there's always that but at the end of everything I want to say. ;)

I was actually a bit suprised at how vehemently some people disagreed with [livejournal.com profile] lilysaid's post, not to mention actually misinterpreting what she said in it since I thought she was very clear on what was her opinion and what was her professor's. I know it's very uncharitable of me but I kind of got the impression that there were some guilty consciences involved :-)

I've felt tempted to rant a little about current icon fashions but I haven't, mostly because as you say none of them are very common in pop. I can stand a bit of grunge-ing but what I really hate are the current fad of using selective colouring to excess. Those horrid light reds and blues *shudder*

Yeah, brushes and light textures seem to be completely unfashionable at the moment. I guess they'll come back into favour again in six months or so :-)

And don't get me started on cropping! I like a bit of artistic cropping but now the fashion seems to be for totally incomrehensible cropping! *rants and grumbles like an old vinegary spinster*

Oh, that feedback thing. I would be more interested in the ripostes if any of their authors had actually read the original post, which was pretty low-key.
And, hey! Speaking as a Uni administrator, well done your Boy for the Uni offer.

That's the problem with discussions ultimately originating in a locked post somewhere -- if it's a topic people are interested in and want to discuss, they don't have any option but to use other people's summaries when they're talking about it.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that, consider me clueless.

Ah, right. I just followed the link from the other post, and didn't find anything. It didn't occur to me that it was because it was originally open and only flocked/deleted later, because pretty much the whole of her LJ is flocked, including the no-comment repost.

I have nothing for trickyfish day, nor any ideas for JuC day. *meeps with you*

Also, ahahaha. There's a reason why I have unfashionable icons listed in my keywords. :)

Love the last Lance icon!
