Brave Author story, part one

Dammit. There's a little bit more to go on my Brave Author story, but my eyes are closing—convention weekends don't tend to allow for much sleep, especially in slightly crap hotels with manky mattresses and very noisy pipes—so I'm going to post the first part now while it's still, just, February, and hope to get the last scene done and the rest posted tomorrow.
