Inauguration thoughts

There's something about the sight of a really huge crowd that moves me. All those people gathered in one place for the same purpose. Solemn occasions, celebratory occasions, occasions that are both, like today's. All those people for whom it meant something, meant so much that they would get up at some ungodly hour and stand in freezing temperatures for hours. Crowds like that are brilliant.

And a new American President who is intelligent and thoughtful and serious and who has the most beautiful, infectious smile! I hope he can do... wow, if he can do a twentieth of what people hope he can do, we'll see a new world.

I have been well entertained today. There really is something about huge crowds and moving speeches - I mean, I have to get my showy politics somewhere! Because I have to admit, I have absolutely no clue what even happens in Finland when we get a new president. They just go to the office and start working? We're so boringly practical. I might have to investigate this a bit. :D

ETA: Okay, I just checked, and they are sworn in in front of the parliament, review the troops and give a couple of speeches. It is on TV, but I don't think I've ever been home to watch it (or have been too young to remember).

It's been one amazing day. I took the day off and my mom and I just sat and watched the news most of the day. It was an amazing feeling to even being to sense the excitement down in D.C. today. Even just watching on tv, it was a momentous occasion - both personally since I'm for Obama and also historically. To watch him give his Inaugural speech just blew me away.

What struck me is how much religion there is in the ceremony! Which, in a country which makes such a point of separation of church and state, seems incongruous to me. But it was a good ceremony.

I suppose there's some kind of formal proceeding when we elect a new government - I've never taken much notice. And I'm too young to have lived through the proceeding for a new head of state here.

It was amazing to see how happy the people in the crowd were - so much enthusiasm on faces of *every* colour. And I do think President Obama is a wonderful speaker. He inspires without being airy.

His speeches are always so inspiring. And to everyone.

I just hope people are patient and give him a decent change. Solving all these issues is going to take time and will not happen overnight.

It would be pretty cool to see the coronation of a new monarch - there would be some serious bling! But I suppose that will happen in my lifetime. :D
