In the garden
Aug. 12th, 2011 06:55 pmThe strawberry plants are not very productive, probably because I have no idea what a strawberry-grower is supposed to do to encourage them. However, the strawberries they do produce are incredibly good. Like eating perfume when you've only had eau de cologne before.
The fuchsias are doing quite nicely, though.

They started out as big, fat, promising buds.

This one was taken through the conservatory window.

A closer look at that first, bold bloom.

The yellow ones followed:

Fabulous, or what?

The three tallest stems, which are at least eighteen inches taller than these, still sport only smallish buds. I await with interest!

Date: 2011-08-13 03:51 pm (UTC)As for the strawberries, watch them...I tried growing them for the first time this year, and was pleased as punch on July 3 when I saw there were about a dozen ~almost ripe enough for me to pick. I got life-busy for a couple of days, and when I next checked them...some damn thing ET 'EM! Yes, some critter (squirrel, bird, rabbit mebbe) chomped all the fruit and left me with the boring plant. Gee, thanks. LOL Hope you have better luck at least eating one of the berries.

Date: 2011-08-13 04:25 pm (UTC)I've managed to nom a few fruits from the strawberry plants, and OMG they are incredibly good. Shop-bought strawberries are nothing to it - even shop-bought strawberries that have been marinaded in balsamic vinegar+sugar cannot compare, although these are pretty damn good, too. I shall have to push the cat outside more often, to deter at least the birds from molesting my plants!

Date: 2011-08-24 12:06 am (UTC)Late with this, but strawberries are pretty self-sufficient. I know cause I managed to grow a decent amount of them on a fire escape in Manhattan in about 99% shade. They can take care of themselves!
