Drills, etc

There is a drill in the space at the bottom of my garden where a house and garden used to be. It is quite large. It has been drilling deep holes for several days, and makes a howling noise like distant wind.

In other news, I got another postcard! This one has a picture of a very handsome house, specifically, George W Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate. If it were in this country, I should describe it as a Stately Home. Sadly, it is described as a 'chateaux' in the printed text on the postcard. Thank you, mysterious postcard-sender whose signature I cannot decipher! :-D

It was quite a surprise when it turned up last week! The howling usually starts at about 8.30am, which isn't too uncivilised. Beast has been greatly interested in the mechanics of it all, and hoped there was a pipe down the middle of the drill bit to splurt concrete into the hole, but it turns out to be a lot less high-tech: there's a dumper truck which fills up with cement and drives across to tip it down the hole.

I'm not sure I'd call the Biltmore a chateaux. I'd call it a damn big house. 101 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms. And the Vanderbilts had five mastiffs, which had free reign of the place. It's a wonder they didn't lose them.

Aha! Well, thank you, it was a fine treat to get an extra one. We spent quite a bit of time puzzling over the mysterious white pole amidst the trees in the middle of the picture...

I don't think 'chateau' is a *bad* description, since it's obviously French-style and huge. But I object to that 'x' on the end there!
