Day 27: Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

At my computer, and I very rarely write by hand these days. Only when I've turned everything off and gone to bed and am struck with something I must write. I have an idea "The First Step" may have been generated that way.


My Boy and I were talking earlier today about fantasy novels, which he has been devouring at a great rate lately. I didn't have much to contribute, being as how I have not been reading published fiction in any meaningful way for ages. But I was very interested that he noted most of the books he's read lately have female heroes - protagonists, perhaps I should say. And, that the one he'd read most recently with a male protagonist was so boring he could hardly get through it. (I don't know what proportion of his reading has been female authors, but that could well be relevant.)

I muttered something about how women characters could be more interesting than men in the same circumstances, but I didn't have a lot to go on as I don't know what he's been reading. But have any of you noticed this?

For a bonus, anyone got any recs for him?

what sort of fantasy is he reading? urban fantasy where things are mostly like our world, with paranormal/supernatural elements, or the traditional groups of misfits go on a quest? I can probably rec stuff from either/both categories, but knowing what he prefers would help

a *lot* of urban fantasy any more has female protagonists, but more & more the quest stories also feature strong women

Hmmmmm. I don't know. He read the Trudi Canavan series which are set in pseudo-medieval worlds with mind-powers and active gods. He's read a couple by Glenda Larke, one is called 'Song of the Shiver Barrens', which sounds fairly traditional to me, and he's recently become extremely keen on Maria Snyder's books. Also a series by Peter Hamilton whose name I have forgotten.

As far as I can tell, he likes the stories to get going reasonably quickly and to make sense. He's an Aspie and likes things to be properly thought out!

I'll see if I can come up a handful of possibilities - I've tended more to the urban fantasy lately but as an avid reader might be able to come up with a few titles he's not already read

That'd be cool - I've been agreeably surprised by his sudden interest in reading, and wish to encourage it!

I hesitated over the "Boy" part of things, before I make any recommendations ... how old is he?

He's 22, though a pretty young 22, if that makes sense.
