Spectacular Oz
Mar. 17th, 2014 08:57 pmI'm not a photographer by nature, and since the only equipment I have or am qualified to use is my phone, most of the things I marvel at don't come across particularly well when I take pictures anyway. But I do want to put up a few pics, because… well.
Firstly, and only BECAUSE I CAN, .

Yes, it really was that stunning on that day. Sydney Harbour is amazing. I think it must have been on the Monday of our stay, possibly as we were on our way to go out on the harbour in a tall ship. Here's proof that we were on a tall ship, for that chap climbing up to the crow's nest (!) is Tristan. He was totally delighted with the view thus obtained.

Anyway. Tuesday was our day in the Blue Mountains.
We walked alongside a lovely little creek, oddly variable in size, with a lot of teeny tiny waterfalls along its length. Like this one.

We were in a valley, and making a gentle descent. The colours were amazingly vivid, and I have a great love of the way so many trees in Australia are nakedly silver.

Eventually we got to what seemed to be a rather more significant waterfall—rather more than the height of a person.

Here are Bun and Tristan at the foot of that waterfall.

And the creek meandered on…

Holy shit, where did the ground go?

I was overwhelmed. Seriously. Stunned. I didn't even look at the waterfall for several minutes, because I was staring out at the amazing tree-covered slopes and the rocky verticals of this huge valley. So beautiful.

Eventually, of course, I turned to see what the fuss was about. Ah. Now that *is* a waterfall. At least… you can see perhaps the first third, maybe only the first quarter of it, here.
The water was so fine it looked like lace, but even so it was hard to believe there could be anything like that flow, when the creek we'd been following was so small.
After a while we stopped staring and made our way back across it, then up towards the car park where we had our picnic lunch. Here's a view from the opposite side. Observe, if you will, the people. Again, it's probably about a quarter of the height, because I couldn't get more in the picture.

It was utterly stunning.
