We've just spent a couple of days looking at houses in Norwich. And I fell in love with this one, which is described as a semi-detached house. Well, yeah, that is strictly true, except that what it is semi-detached from is a mighty, three-storey mansion.

The house is *beautiful*. The lounge made me gasp. (That there in the middle is a little turret with a windowed peak.) Alas that it is (a) a Listed building, which means that (b) the windows cannot be double glazed without a great deal of pain and expense (and it is already somewhat above our price bracket), and (c) the *immense* back garden is a flat plain with a river at the bottom, so that after a particularly damp spell one might reasonably expect to be wading in the kitchen. Also, (d) it's not really in the right part of town.

But it's *beautiful*.

It's a lot easier to figure out the house in person, although to be fair, it was still a bit confusing as when we looked at the place it was empty. Hard to keep straight the layout when you can't immediately identify what a room is (a couple of the bedrooms are on the ground floor).

That's a lovely house! So light and airy, particularly the upper storey with the open ceiling. But yeah, the location of that river is positively inviting flooding :-/

Yes, indeed. It's only a young river at that point, but it would be so devastating to be flooded.

that living room is *amazing* - wading through the kitchen, however, would be much less so.

It really is exceptionally gorgeous. I would have been very happy to live there, and would have invited ALL THE PEOPLE over to be impressed... but it's not the right place for us. Sigh.

You can imagine my excitement as we went round... but it's not the right house for us. It's like the glamorous, unattainable actor/pop star you have a crush on but cannot have. What I need is a husband house!

Yeah... I would have been begging you all to come and visit if we'd bought that house!

We did go round a very nice one, with a mighty garden and a little swimming pool, which appealed quite a lot. Had we been on a deadline we would probably have made an offer for it, but it was on a rather busy road, and we'd have had to have the workmen in to install a couple of ensuite bathrooms. And, well, we thought we'd wait and see if something turns up in one of the nice, quiet streets instead.

Actually, the last house we viewed was *huge*. We could have had Camp there. Gigantic bedrooms, *fabulous* bathrooms, and a mighty Games Room which would have made a very reasonable dormitory... As we got back into our car, I commented that it was very nouveau riche. Apparently, it was built with the expectation that a footballer would buy it! It wasn't us.

So there are enough rich footballers that it makes sense to build stuff with them in mind???

I don't think I'd recommend Eaton, though. Cringleford is meant to be lovely, but if you're looking at closer to the city, have you considered the Trafford Road/Ipswich Road/Christchurch Road area?

We saw a house in (?)Church Avenue, just off Christchurch Road, but it was the same price as the glorious house and about half the size! I wouldn't mind living in one of the little side roads thereabouts—there are some nice shops along Unthank Road, and I like having little shops handy—but overall, we're more interested in Thorpe St Andrew. Again, one of the side roads—we did see a quite promising house on Harvey Lane, but that is such a busy road.

Oh, Harvey Lane IS busy, yes. If you go a little further north you get the shops along Plumstead Road, but that's uncomfortably close to Heartsease.

Christchurch Road area is expensive, the schools around there are excellent so there's a lot of competition for houses, but it really is a lovely area to live.

Ooh, it's gorgeous! What does the Environment Agency flood risk map say about it? Sometimes there can be a deceptive amount of slope on things that look completely flat.

It's in a flood risk area, though I'm not sure whether that's every tennish years or every hundred. Meh. It's already under offer, so I'm glad I'd figured out that it is Not For Us. Really. :-(

That is quite stunning! I could fall in love with the bathroom. I have no idea why, but I quite like large, roomy bathrooms!

I suspect if you could be coerced to buy it that the rest of us could be convinced to come visit you. Perhaps we could all arrange to land on your doorstep at the same time and make a party of it, because it certainly looks as though you'd have the room.

Believe me, if we'd bought it I would have been *paying* you all to come and visit so I could show it off! I could have put a couple of giant marquees on the back lawn for you all to bed down in, too!

Ah, Chekov! While I have no actual memories of seeing Star Trek, I must have done, for there is a special place in my memories for Chekov.
