I'm sure I mentioned the visitors who came to see this house, because they'd lived in it as children in the late 1950s/early '60s. One of the changes they noticed was the big shed in the front garden—known as 'the Lion's Cage'. This surprised me—the shed looks 'period' and I'd assumed it was a long-term fixture.

Yesterday, I discovered that the Lion's Cage... probably actually was a lion's cage. Apparently it was bought second-hand from one of the big estates in the county, where the landowners had been the type of acquisitive chap who acquired... exotic animals. There's even a nebulous story that a child was killed by the lion, and the lion was got rid of. And hence also, the cage was got rid of.

The neighbours told us! I'd invited them round for Afternoon Tea, and the subject meandered that way. They've lived here for more than thirty years, and have heard all sorts of amazing stories.

Wow, that's some story! I wonder why the previous owners decided it would be a good idea to purchase it?!! A talking piece? Hey, remember that lion that killed that kid . . . ? o_O *g*

I have *no* idea whether it is true, rumour, some wildly exaggerated or misapplied version of something else... but I think the bit about buying the giant shed from a big estate is true. The style of the "lion's cage" is definitely a cut above your average shed. Although there are no giant scratch marks on the floor!
