I must admit I didn't get on with the first of her books that I tried. Perhaps I should have another go.

Which one was that? There's quite a difference between her earlier and later works and sometimes I like her early stuff better than the later. The series mentioned in article is one of my favourites among her early stuff.

I already stated most firmly to my Beast that I am not prepared to stretch the waiting period any longer, but we will have to do the paying because FIL doesn't want to. It's just irritating.
