Just popping in for a quick post before I irrigate my nasal passages.

Please.

palate the roof of the mouth, separating the cavities of the mouth and nose in vertebrates and, obviously related to this, a person's ability to distinguish between and appreciate different flavours

pallet - a straw mattress or a temporary bed; in medieval stories, a place where serfs might sleep, in modern situations a wooden tray that can be picked up by a fork lift truck

palette - a thin board on which an artist lays and mixes coloure; or, relatedly, the range of colours used by a particular artist or in a particular picture; or, relatedly, the range or variety of tonal or instrumental 'colour' in a musical piece

Well, it worked miraculously, but about ten minutes later my head was a solid block again. Sigh.

It's a losing battle, I'm afraid, right up there with trying to get people to disambiguate "defuse" and "diffuse".

Though whether the distinction was this way round or that, at least there *was* a distinction. These days it's not worth using the word at all.
