When I saw this sweater on Jake Gyllenhaal, on Tom & Lorenzo's site, I thought ooh, hmm, interesting, I wouldn't mind knitting a sweater with those wonky stripes. Opinion on the site, however, is hostile.

It looks like garter stitch (or might be stocking stitch) in that green yarn with stocking stitch in blue with some extra wraparounds to uneven the stripes. And a bit crap around the neck, but that could be amended. I think a rather quieter yarn would probably be better, too, as the shiny doesn't seem to be necessary given the interest generated by the weird stripes.

What do you think? Would you knit such a thing?

I think it's reverse stockinette in the green (p on the RS), stockinette in the blue/black (k on the RS). I actually question whether the uneven stripes are created with short rows; it looks to me like the same # of rows in the wide parts of the rows as in the narrow parts, but just worked at a much larger gauge. Maybe drastically increasing & decreasing the needle size?

I would never in a million years knit something like this (for myself, anyway), but I can appreciate the appeal for someone with a much different aesthetic.

*squints* I...don't love the sweater. It is interesting and wonky, and the color combinations are odd. It might be salvageable with different colors...maybe?

I've made shawls that way, but not sweaters. I'm not sure how it would affect the fit.

I really like the uneven stripes, though I'm not wowed by those colors together. However, as far as actual knitting, the question is moot for me, I don't have the knitting chops to do that yet...

Looks like stockinette stitch, with the blue stripes -- as you say -- made with varied extra wraparounds. Not sure if the smooth side is in or out or alternates with the stripes, as the tension is pretty loose and the structure shows, but the photo isn't clear enough for good detail.

I'm not a big wraparound fan so I wouldn't do it for myself, but it's an interesting look.

I don't know if I'd knit it, but I think I'd probably wear it! I like the wonky stripes! And also the blue-green color scheme. It's...oceanic!

(I spent my whole life thinking I couldn't wear blue anything, 'cos my eyes are green and that color combo didn't thrill me at all. I've changed my mind in recent years, though. Dress me up like a mermaid princess! Gimme blue-green everything!)

I wouldn't knit it, because the open mesh would snag on things when worn, but I like the look of it.

Aase's Shawl has a similar kind of structure as the uneven stripes bit, and I gave up knitting that after 8 repeats because I knew I'd never be able to wear it because it would catch on absolutely everything. It might actually work better in a sweater, because it would be fitting closer to the body...
