The Detective Work begins!

A Shot Was Fired. (see yesterday's entry)
In the Library
When the guests (and Lady Cynthia) arrived in the Library, this is the scene that met their eyes. NB Most regrettably, Mr Razzo noted down all the details for publication in his 'newspaper'.
Sir Alfred Groat, face down on the floor in a pool of red. His hitherto immaculate collar appears to be somewhat mangled and his bow tie has come off. He is dead.
The window is wide open. (It should be noted that the Library is on the ground floor of the Groat residence.)
There is a whisky decanter on the table, and a spilled glass of whisky.
A red-stained dagger is on the floor close to the corpse.
On the table is a wedding photograph of the (immediately recognisable) young Sir Alfred and a bride who is recognisably not Lady Cynthia.
Behind the corpse, on a shelf and on the floor below it, are the pieces of a shattered vase. The wall behind the shelf where the vase stood is badly cracked.
Also on the table is a pile of letters, of which only the top one has been (very neatly) opened.
There is a small portable dictation machine on the desk, plugged in but not switched on.
There is a box of exclusive chocolates from Un Bras et Une Jambe on the table. The lid is off, and three chocolates have already been consumed.
There is a just-begun note on the table, in Sir Alfred’s own handwriting:

How terrible! Whatever can have happened? How did he die? Was he shot? Or stabbed, with that dagger on the floor there? Or - was something else the cause of death?
Your speculations are invited!

Date: 2006-01-09 07:42 pm (UTC)the shot is a red herring - it hit the vase and wall.
OR! the red-stained dagger is a (literal) red herring - the red ink he was using for his letter was carelessly spilled on it.
