Thank you, all of you who left kind comments on my post yesterday. I do appreciate it, though I generally haven't made a response.
This post is really for me.
My beautiful Princess Fluffykins was hit by a car some time on Monday night. A neighbour came to the house as I was having breakfast, and showed us the cat corpse at his gate. Beast took her to the vet to have the chip confirm her identity, but there was never really any doubt, even though her magnificent tail was sodden.
Now there are little cat-ghosts around the house. No more Fluffy snuggled between my knees as I knit, no twining of cats round Beast's legs as he takes them their food. No opaque, entitled jade eyes staring at me as I eat, no pink nose dipping into my breakfast bowl as she harasses me for her share, no silken coat to stroke. No tabby brush covering Sable as they share the sofa.
This is the last photo of Fluffy.

We showed Sable the body, so that she would in some sort understand where her companion had gone. I think she understood, and was horrified. She put her ears back and ran into the garden at once. When she came back in, she paced carefully round the entire room, smelling the traces of Fluffy on the carpet, then went to sleep on the cushion they had shared. She was obviously distressed, poor little cat. The vets advised extra treats and lots of cuddles. She won't tolerate cuddles, but she did get cheese yesterday.
We buried Fluffy in the back garden, and put a large stone over her.
